Master of Criminal Justice (MCJ)

Programme Overview
The Master of Criminal Justice (MCJ) is a multidisciplinary programme offered by the Faculty of Law with the cooperation of the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Science and Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Guest lecturers from outside the university are also invited from time to time.
The programme fulfills the need to train professional and skilled personnel who are involved in the criminal justice system. The programme is designed to provide an in-depth understanding of the criminal justice system and covers concepts of crime, deviance, justice, criminology, exercise of police powers, as well as crime scene investigations. Issues of law enforcement, judicial and juvenile justice and corrections will also be explored. The course is suitable for the training of law practitioners and law enforcement personnel, social workers as well as those who want to build a career in the criminal justice system.

It is suitable not only for training practitioners in the local criminal justice system but also practitioners from overseas.

Applicants for admission must submit to the Registrar a detailed statement of their degree(s), qualifications, relevant experience and, where relevant, the proposed field of research to be undertaken. Applications are then considered by the Higher Degrees Committee of the Faculty which submits its recommendations to the Faculty for approval. The Faculty will inform the Senate of successful applicants.

Entry Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree with honours with at least a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 or its equivalent; or
  • A bachelor’s degree with honours with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of less than
  • but not less than 2.3 or its equivalent and have:
    - relevant working experience; or
    - other qualification(s) approved by the Senate or the Faculty from time to time.

English Language Requirement:
All courses are conducted in English.

  • A foreign candidate intending to follow this programme must have obtained a score of 600 for TOEFL or band 7.00 for IELTS.
  • A foreign candidate may be exempted from the English Language requirement if the Faculty is satisfied that the candidate’s degree has been obtained from a university or institution of higher learning where the medium of instruction is English.

Bahasa Malaysia Requirement:

  • A candidate who is a non-Malaysian citizen will be required to attend and pass a course in Bahasa Malaysia conducted by the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics before being conferred his master’s degree unless he possesses at least a pass in Bahasa Malaysia at the level of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia or Peringkat III Sijil Kecekapan Bahasa Malaysia or Peringkat III Sijil Intensif Bahasa Malaysia of the University or an equivalent level.
  • A candidate who is a Malaysian citizen must possess at least a pass in Bahasa Malaysia at the level of Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia or Peringkat III Sijil Kecekapan Bahasa Malaysia or Peringkat III Sijil Intensif Bahasa Malaysia of the University or an equivalent level before being conferred his master’s degree.

Programme Structure
The Master of Criminal Justice totals 36 credit hours of which less than 30% of the total credit hours are allocated for the research
component, and involves the following:

  • nine core courses with 3 credit hours for each course; and
  • a Research Project of 9 credit hours.

Duration of Study
The duraion of the programmes depends on the requirements of the individual programmes and also on how fast you progress. The
duration is 2 - 8 semesters.

Course Fees
MBA students are required to choose three courses as electives from the following list:
