The Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) Ladies Chorus successfully held their 10th anniversary celebration concert on 22 and 23 August 2015 at Damansara Performing Arts Centre (DPAC). The concert entitled ‘Gratitude’ brought together current MIA students as well as the alumni to perform and celebrate a solid ten years of hard work, progression and success. The concert programme consists of different genre of works and in different languages and level of difficulties. The show started off with the ladies chorus performing Ulek Mayang, a Malay traditional song and surely it got the audience mesmerized. Delightful duet performance of ‘Duetto Buffo di due Gatti’ (humorous duet for two cats) whereby the lyrics consist entirely of the repeated word ‘meow’ was also one of highlights of the show. The MIA Male Chorus chipped in and gave the concert another twist with their debut performance during the show.

The second half of the concert featured a number of original compositions by MIA alumni and lecturers. The audience were amazed by the performance of the choir and were generous with their applause throughout the show. Ms. Susanna Saw, the choral director expressed her happiness of overseeing the ladies choir for the past 10 years. “The members of the choir are the ones who have given me a chance to progress as a conductor. They are my inspiration and my teacher but most of all, I want to thank them for their friendship”, she said.

The MIA Ladies Choir was formed in 2005 under the auspices of MIA’s Music Department. The choir have participated in many performances and won various competitions over the years. One of their proudest moments was at the 6th World Choir Games in Shaoxing, China in 2010 where they won the gold medal and world championship in the female chamber category. Their recent achievement was a gold diploma at the 4th International Choir Competition 2015 in Hoi An, Vietnam.
