HELP University’s new Subang 2 campus

HELP University’s new Subang 2 campus will begin operations in April 2016, and is set to be the educational, intellectual, cultural, and social hub for the Subang 2 community.

The Subang 2 campus is located along Persiaran Cakerawala, Taman Subang Delima in Shah Alam, next to the Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia which will be redeveloped as part of the Greater Kuala Lumpur Development Project under the 10^th Malaysia Plan. The new campus is thus located in the next most exciting development in the Klang Valley.

Datuk Dr Paul Chan, Vice-Chancellor and President of HELP University said: “We’re extremely pleased that the first phase of the Subang 2 campus will be completed this year, as 2016 is a landmark year for HELP University, it is our 30^thAnniversary. We have planned many events to include the community around the vicinity, the students, parents, and staff.”

“When we first founded HELP Institute, we never thought that we would one day become a university. It was a dream come true when we became a University College in 2004, and a university in 2011. We have sacrificed a lot during these three decades, and we overcame many challenges to achieve our dreams, and the Subang 2 campus is the realization of the success. HELP University has become a model of global success,” said Datuk Dr. Paul Chan.

The renowned Faculty of Behavioural Sciences at HELP University, which houses one of the largest psychology programmes for a private university in Southeast Asia will be moving out of Damansara Heights to this brand new, purpose built campus in Subang 2.

Two other faculties, which are the Faculty of Business, Economics and Accounting, and the HELP Matriculation Centre, will also be expanding to this new campus, and will be accepting new cohorts of students. Existing business and matriculation students will remain in the Damansara Heights campus.

Dr Goh Chee Leong, Vice President of HELP University, and Dean of the Faculty of Behavioural Sciences said regarding the move to the new campus: “As one of the largest Psychology departments in Southeast Asia, the new campus represents a recognition of our need for space and facilities in order to continue our growth into a truly world class programme. We will be building new psychology labs that will enable our academics and students the opportunity to conduct research in a large variety of areas including neuropsychology, cognitive psychology, human-computer interactions, developmental psychology, and social psychology.”

“Our proximity to HELP International School will also enable partnerships to develop our Educational and School Psychology Masters programme. We believe our psychology students will enjoy the new start of the art facilities and beautiful green campus environment that will spur them to even greater accomplishments in the years to come.

“The new campus also enables us to play host to some exciting new events this year, including our historic first Psychology School Convention in June, and the Malaysian Student Assembly in November. HELP is planning to host some international psychology conferences in 2017 at the new venue,” said Dr Goh.

The whole suite of psychology programmes from the faculty will be offered in the new campus. They are the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours), Bachelor of Business Psychology (Honours), and the Flinders-HELP Joint Degree Bachelor of Psychological Science, and Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours),

As for the programmes from the Faculty of Business, Economics, and Accounting, the following majors will be offered: Accounting, Finance, Marketing, and International Business.

The HELP Matriculation Centre will be offering the Foundation in Arts programme in the new campus.

These three faculties will be occupying the current development, Phase One, which is built on 4.6 acres of land, and consists of 7 distinct blocks to accommodate 2,500 students. The facilities include a 500-seater multipurpose hall which can be used for lectures and performances, two 100-seater lecture halls, a student parade lounge which forms the main spine of the campus, and three academic blocks for the teaching and administrative faculties. There is also a two storey library, two rooftop gardens, and a café on campus.

The university will be sharing facilities with HELP International School which is situated on the 24-acre land of the HELP Education Precinct.

The main concept of the iconic campus is the Student Parade, which is the main spine that will connect all the buildings. The Student Parade is built to accommodate events such as Open Days, discussions, meetings, student events, coffee breaks and gatherings. Given its importance as the focal point of the whole campus, the surrounding spaces leading to the classes and buildings will be landscaped with excellent water and garden features to provide a conducive and beautiful learning environment for the students.

The campus will be easily accessible by public transport once the Sungai Buloh-Kajang MRT line is completed and the university will be providing shuttle buses for students. Student accommodation is also available in the vicinity, and the university is working with a portal to help students find a place to live in.

Using tropical rainforest as the principle theme for the Subang 2 campus, the form and flow of the university expresses a sophisticated kind of harmony with the elements, mirroring what is experienced in our tropical rainforests. Selected fruit trees and lifestyle water features will be part of its landscape.

One of the key statements of this campus is its enthusiastic dedication to going green and being energy efficient. Passive green design features such as open corridors, cross ventilation, rainwater harvesting, energy efficient lighting, use of recycled materials, sunlight shading and harvesting of natural daylight will be incorporated throughout the campus.

The future development plans for the whole campus includes a 16-storey faculty block, a podium, a 16-storey student accommodation block that will cater for 3,000 students, excellent recreational facilities, and retail facilities.
