First City UC Rolls Out More Homegrown Programmes

In May 2017, First City UC is commencing two brand new homegrown degrees: BA (Hons) Mass Communication and Bachelor of Software Engineering (Hons) to meet the demands of the fast-changing industry which is constantly innovating itself to keep up with the digital world and current market trend. The launch of new programmes reinforces First City UC's commitment to provide the best quality education to ensure its graduates are employable immediately upon graduation.

Shaping up effective communicators

First City UC’s homegrown bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication has been devised to prepare students with the relevant skills and in-depth know-how required to keep up with the ever-changing demands of the very competitive media and communications industry. The module was designed in such a way that students would be armed with knowledge covering over a wide scope of media fundamentals including public relations and communication, media planning and management as well as practical skills necessary to become effective communicators. In addition to the academic syllabus, there will also be exposure to field trips, research and consultancy projects that are organised to extend the students’ learning experience beyond the confines of the classroom. Apart from the specific subject areas within the programmes, there is the inculcation of soft skills development which will prepare the graduates in meeting industry demands in having both the appropriate qualifications, as well as the requisite skills including time management, problem solving, teamwork and collaboration. This is in line with the university college’s goal of producing excellent and well-rounded graduates.

Similarly, First City UC’s Faculty of Engineering and Computing is committed in equipping students with skills and techniques in programming, application development, information analysis and many other applications of IT in various industries that are relevant to the demands of employers around the world. The bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering is specially-designed to provide students with a strong foundation in these areas using a combination of classroom and laboratory learning environment and the application of techniques and software development tools. As part of the academic collaboration with IBM Malaysia, First City UC has adopted IBM curriculum in the programme, where students have the opportunity to work on Large Scale Computing, Cloud Computing and Mobile Platform Programming and apply the techniques they learnt to develop a broad range of software relevant to the ICT industry. Since the establishment of the MoU in 2008, First City UC has produced high calibre graduates equipped with professional IBM certification, which provides them with the cutting edge when they look for jobs in the current challenging market.
