For the Love of Art

If we think back to the time when we were in kindergarten, chances are many of us would probably remember the countless hours we spent drawing and colouring. We would also cut up coloured paper and attempt to reorganise them into a pretty mosaic. We would sing, dance and play instruments, even if they consisted only of the humble castanets, triangle, bells or tambourine.

Today, things are not very different for the little ones. Parents and kindergartens often encourage young children to draw, sing and dance. They encourage their children to be creative and cheer them on at concerts, armed with cameras and other recording devices. But somewhere along the way, something happens and all these change. Parents and teachers are more concerned about students hitting the books, doing revision and sharpening your skills by practising on past year papers.

Art becomes a neglected subject and let's not even consider music (unless your school has a band or you're taking lessons on your own). If you put up a sketch or dance, it's only because there's an upcoming event and entertainment is needed.

So what happened to the arts when you grew up? Do you miss it or are you glad you never have to paint or perform again?

In the meantime, there are many avenues for you as a student, to explore the arts scene in Malaysia today. Go beyond the activities at school – find out more about local performances and workshops, and opportunities as a volunteer.

In fact, why not hop over to the Yayasan Sime Darby Arts Festival on 13 & 14 September 2014 at klpac. There will be over 250 dance, film, music, theatre, traditional and visual arts events spread over 48 hours for free (10am -8pm) and a Gala Night on Sunday from 8.30-10.30pm. Use this opportunity to mingle and get to know more about the arts industry in Malaysia.

Wait, there's more! You can also go to the Kakiseni International Arts Festival (#kakisenifest) which will be held at PavilionKL from 12-16 September 2014. There will be Malaysian and international award-winning performing arts showcases; visual art installations; busking by lyrical poets, singer songwriters, bands and international workshops. The festival will conclude with a street parade in Bukit Bintang in celebration of Malaysia Day on 16 September. Performances are free for all.
