Are you a tech geek? Maybe not but chances are, many people around you are computer and smartphone users – I mean, what would we do without the internet these days? From instant messaging to creative apps, we can now play games, socialise and get all sorts of information and entertainment online. The question is: are you interested in technology beyond just using devices and apps? Are you fascinated about how digital information is spread? Do you want to know more about computer systems and how and why people use them? Do you enjoy building websites, playing games or reading about the latest developments in ICT? A career in computing could be just the thing for you.

Computing

This field is about the study of computational approaches in science and engineering, and the use of information-processing applications in information flow, data capture, information systems design and specification, and user interface design. The aim of this field is to: develop an understanding of computer languages and the foundation of computational theory; develop the ability to analyse, design and manage information systems; and understand the sociological impact of information technology.

Sub-fields include:
  • Computer use (computer software use, internet use programmes)
  • Database and network design and administration (computer science)
  • Software and applications development and analysis (computer science)

What you will learn

  1. Computer use (computer software use, internet use programmes)

In this sub-field, you will learn the basics required to use a computer proficiently. You will be taught computer skills, e-mail skills, word processing skills as well as web skills. These skills will help increase your productivity when using the computer for more advanced tasks.

  2. Database and network design and administration (computer science)

Courses in this sub-field will teach you all about the development, administration and management of databases. You will learn how to use network databases to organise information, design web applications, and programme basic computer programmes. Most courses cover areas such as systems analysis, programming, operating systems, networking, computer communications, networks management, information security and network design.

  3. Software and applications development and analysis (computer science)
This sub-field focuses on algorithms, software development and the underlying theory of computation. Among the areas you'll study are programming languages (C++ or Java), database management or computer networks, operating systems, and computer architecture, as well as web languages and software engineering.
