Did you know that Malaysia is one of the most technologically developed countries amongst industrialising nations in the ASEAN region? Are you interested in being part of the growing human capital in the manufacturing sector? Do you want a career that makes you ready for 4IR?

The Bachelor of Technology (Honours) in Industrial Management is a new programme offered by Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) through its Faculty of Engineering and Green Technology (FEGT). Designed to propel the students towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) with the strengths and knowledge in manufacturing, services, technology, and marketing research, the programme provides extensive understanding and knowledge of mastering industry management, especially in the manufacturing sector.

Starting with basic business and management principles, the framework of the programme trains candidates in capitalising IT appliances to serve international operations. The programme provides employment opportunities in all major disciplines of Industrial Management, also known as Operation Management. Graduates in this discipline can look forward to careers in various public and private sectors that include manufacturing, petroleum, banking, logistics, and research entities as project planners, schedulers, researchers, and many others.

In the Eleventh Malaysia Plan (11MP) 2016-2020, the government continues to push the agenda of producing human capital that is equipped with the right knowledge, skills, and attitudes to thrive in a globalised economy. By the end of the 11MP, 85,000 employers are expected to adopt policies in the 11MP, compared with 76,000 in 2013, which will benefit about 3.7 million employees. In addition, continuous upskilling and reskilling of the existing workforce will contribute to productivity growth. This new programme by UTAR, which specialises in the development of human capital in the manufacturing sector, enables the younger generation to be equipped with analytical skills and capabilities to cater to the demands for expertise and professionals in the market. The demand for skilled workers and experts in the area of manufacturing is expected to grow in the coming years.

The Bachelor of Technology (Honours) in Industrial Management programme will enable its students to keep abreast with changes in the working environment, for example, the work trend in many industries is shifting from department-based to project-based and multi-tasking. As such, an ideal project leader and technologist needs to be equipped with both technical engineering and management knowledge in order to remain competitive. This management knowledge includes marketing strategy, cost optimisation, information systems, logistics management, and quality post commissioning. This programme equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills to be a good executive, manager and even technologist.

In line with UTAR’s vision to be a university of educational excellence with transformative societal impact, this three-year undergraduate programme provides a coherent body of professional knowledge and technical skills with the aim to produce competent as well as versatile professionals who can adapt to the diverse roles and responsibilities in a challenging and dynamic work environment. A bonus to UTAR’s programme is its holistic education approach where soft skills-based courses are integrated into the curriculum in order to improve the students skill set in the areas of communication, complex problem solving, cultural intelligence, leadership, moral ethics, technopreneurship skills, digital literacy, and so on. These soft skills are in parallel with the Top 10 skills pinpointed by the World Economic Forum’s “Future of Jobs Report” and essential to survive the giant wave of the oncoming 4IR.
