British Council GREAT Scholarships for Malaysians 2022 / 2023

The British Council is offering GREAT Scholarships to all Malaysian students who wish to study postgraduate programmes at the selected UK universities.

For the 2022-23 academic year there are postgraduate scholarships available at the following institutions. Please visit the university page below for more information and how to apply:

Bishop Grosseteste University

In partnership with the British Council and the GREAT Britain Campaign, Bishop Grosseteste University is offering scholarships to students in Malaysia, applying for postgraduate study at BGU*.

The GREAT Scholarships 2021 programme, launched by the British Council together with 41 UK universities, supports postgraduate students from Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Thailand to access world-class UK higher education opportunities.

The scholarship programme offers financial support of a minimum of £10,000 to students pursuing one-year postgraduate study in the UK. Students can apply for courses in a range of subjects, at the 41 institutions across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The number of GREAT Scholarships available for each country is :

  • Malaysia – 1

The deadline for applications is 31st March 2022

*Please note Teaching Training programmes are not included in these scholarships.

Application Process

To apply for a BGU GREAT scholarship, you must first apply for, and have been offered a place on one of our programmes. Once you are in receipt of an offer for a programme please download and complete the scholarship application form by clicking here.

You will be asked to describe your academic achievements, relevant professional experience and/ or career goal. Applicants should also refer to any other information, which supports their application. This should include, but is not limited to:

  • Academic merit – Course entry requirements are met including English Language Requirements, Examination results, transcripts, references, Academic prizes or awards.
  • Career Aspirations – applicants should tell us about their chosen career goal and their aspirations to contribute to their chosen field. Applicants should establish the relevance of the proposed academic course to his/her career plans.
  • Financial need – Applicants will need to explain their financial situation and how they intend to cover the remaining expenses, should their application be successful. Even with a scholarship, applicants will need to evidence they can cover their living expenses within the UK to meet the requirements for a Tier 4 visa.
  • Developmental impact – Applicants should explain how they plan to use their study to develop and contribute to society in their own country. Applicants should evidence any past commitment to ’development’ agendas through participation in relevant projects.
  • Extracurricular Activity – Applicants should provide evidence of activities, which has enhanced their graduate attributes for example, examples of volunteering, leadership, charity work.

The scholarship application process is competitive applications by a panel of Faculty members on the above criteria. BGU reserve the right to not grant scholarships to those who provide evidence of the above criteria, if the application is not of the required quality.

Successful scholars will be issued with a scholarship with a value of £14,000 in the form of a fee discount. All scholarships awarded will be valid for the lifetime of the programme, for postgraduate applicants this is one year.

Please note that applicants should be passport holders of Malaysia.

Applicants for Initial Teacher Training Programmes are not eligible to apply for the GREAT Scholarship.

Keele University

GREAT Scholarships are jointly funded by Keele University with the UK government’s GREAT Britain campaign and the British Council.

We are offering £10,000 towards tuition fees for one-year master’s programmes to students from Malaysia, who will enrol at Keele University in the 2022-23 academic year. Three scholarships are available (one per country) in the following subjects: 

  • MSc Advanced Computer Science
  • MSc Computer Science
  • MSc Accounting and Financial Management
  • MSc Banking and Finance
  • MSc Business Analytics
  • MSc Enterprise and Innovation
  • MA Human Resource Management
  • MSc International Business
  • MSc Investment Management
  • MSc Management
  • MSc Marketing
  • MBA

Please note that applicants must be Malaysian passport holders.

Application Process

In order to apply for a GREAT Scholarship, applicants should:

  1. Apply online for an eligible course through the course webpage 
  2. Complete the relevant application form:

  3. Applications open on 25 October 2021, and close on 31 May 2022.
  4. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit. Successful award holders are to be informed by 17th June 2022.

 

Liverpool John Moores University

GREAT Scholarships are jointly funded by Liverpool John Moores University with the UK government’s GREAT Britain campaign and the British Council. 

How much will the award be worth?

We are offering £10,000 towards tuition fees for one-year master’s programmes to students from Malaysia, who will enrol into UK higher education institutions in the 2022-23 academic year.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must:

  • have an offer of study and have firmly accepted their place before they are eligible to apply for scholarship funding,
  • not have already studied a postgraduate taught degree,
  • have the funds to cover the remaining living costs, travel and any other costs associated with studying at the University,
  • be a national (Passport holder) of Malaysia; and,
  • be classed as an overseas student for fee purposes.

Teesside University

Teesside University is delighted to partner with the British Council and offer four £10,000 scholarships for applicants in the academic year 2022/23 and starting their studies in September 2022.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for a GREAT scholarship, you must:

  • Be a national of one of the following countries: Malaysia
  • Be assessed as international for tuition fee purposes
  • Be self-funded
  • Hold an offer from Teesside University (Conditional or Unconditional) by 30 April 2022 for a postgraduate taught one-year master's programme, commencing September 2022

You must also:

  • Be assessed as international for tuition fee purposes
  • Be self-funded
  • Hold an offer from Teesside University (Conditional or Unconditional) by 30 April 2022 for a postgraduate taught one-year master's programme, commencing September 2022

Application Process

Applications are open until the 30 April 2022

Candidates will be automatically considered for this scholarship; no separate scholarship application is necessary. The scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding candidate displaying exceptional academic merit, displayed in their academic application.

Further information - successful recipients

  • Will be informed by 31 May 2022.
  • Will be unable to combine this scholarship with other Teesside University scholarships.
  • Will be expected to contribute to the wider marketing and outreach activity of Teesside University.

University of Derby

In partnership with the British Council and the GREAT Britain Campaign, the University of Derby is offering 8 scholarships to international students applying for postgraduate courses starting in September 2022. The GREAT Scholarships 2022 programme, launched by the British Council together with 41 UK universities, supports postgraduate students to access world-class UK higher education opportunities.

The scholarship programme offers financial support of £11,000 to eligible students pursuing one year postgraduate study at the University of Derby and must be from one of the following countries: Malaysia.

Application Process

Applications for the British Council GREAT scholarship should be made after you have received an offer, using the form here. As part of your application you will need to include an essay of no more than 500 words about a topic you have studied previously and why you found it interesting. This topic should be related to or have inspired you to apply for your chosen degree programme. This essay will be part of the shortlisting criteria, alongside previous academic achievement, and the potential you show.

  • shortlisted applicants may be asked to attend a video interview with the selection committee
  • the deadline for applications for this scholarship is 23:59 BST on 1 June 2022
  • if you are awarded a GREAT scholarship, you are not eligible to receive any other scholarships or discounts from the University of Derby

University of Dundee

The University of Dundee is pleased to announce 1 scholarship opportunity, in conjunction with the British Council. You are eligible to apply for the GREAT Scholarship 2022 – Malaysia if you:

  • Are a passport holder from Malaysia
  • Have an offer to study a full time, on campus, postgraduate taught course
  • Your course starts in September 2022.
  • Have International Fee status, as verified by the University of Dundee

This scholarship cannot be combined with any other University of Dundee scholarship or award

We are offering £10,000 towards tuition fees for one-year master’s programmes to students from Malaysia, who will enrol into UK higher education institutions in the 2022-23 academic year. 1 scholarship opportunity is available.

  2. The deadline Is Tuesday 31 May 2022, 23:59GMT. All applications must be submitted via the linked form and will not be accepted via email. Any applications received after the closing date and time will not be considered.

 

University of Kent

The GREAT Scholarships programme is funded jointly by the UK Government's GREAT Britain campaign, British Council and the University of Kent, as part of the Study UK campaign.

We are delighted to offer dedicated scholarships of £10,000 to Malaysian passport holders applying for a taught master's programme based at one of our UK campuses. The award will go towards one year of tuition fees. 

Scholarships will be awarded as follows: China (x1), India (x1), Kenya (x1), Malaysia (x1), Nigeria (x1) Thailand (x1), for a total of 6 awards available in 2022. 

Criteria

To be eligible for a scholarship, you must:

  • be a citizen of one of the programme's countries: Malaysia and be assessed as an overseas fee payer.
  • have received a conditional offer and have accepted this before the deadline date of 30 April 2022
  • be active in the field with work experience or proven interest in the subject area
  • be willing to embody the UK Higher Education experience, by attending lectures and tutorials and engaging with extra-curricular activities, and act as an ambassador for UK Higher Education by promoting the value of studying at a UK HEI
  • be willing to establish an engagement with the UK as a scholar, through personal and academic fulfilment
  • Represent the high standards of the GREAT brand by becoming an advocate for scholarships
  • be willing to attend a networking event of all UK-based GREAT scholars, to discuss experiences and capture perceptions of studying in the UK

Application Process

Applications for the British Council GREAT scholarship should be made via your applicant portal. You will only be able to apply for the GREAT Scholarship once you have received an offer for your programme from the University of Kent.

In order to be considered for this award, you will need to submit the following:

  • an essay of no more than 500 words about a topic you have studied previously and why you found it interesting. This topic should be related to or have inspired you to apply for your chosen degree programme.

This document should be uploaded in word or pdf format only, other formats will be rejected.

Scholarships will be awarded based on the information provided on your application to the University of Kent, together with the clear thinking and motivation shown in the submitted essay.

Candidates will be informed of the outcome of this award by 30 June 2022.

The University of Kent reserves the right not to allocate the awards if the selection panel identifies no suitable candidates.

The British Council GREAT Scholarship is subject to full terms and conditions which will be provided to successful candidates at the point of award.

University of Sussex

The GREAT Britain Campaign is the UK government’s initiative to promote the UK internationally as a GREAT place to visit, study and do business. The British Council is a partner in the campaign to raise awareness and promote the UK’s strengths in education, English language and the arts. The GREAT Scholarships scheme is jointly funded by the UK government’s GREAT Britain Campaign, the British Council and the University of Sussex.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • be a citizen of Malaysia
  • have accomplished an undergraduate degree in Malaysia
  • have received and accepted an offer on an eligible Masters
  • have excellent grades  
  • have clear and specific goals with defined links to your course
  • be prepared to attend networking events as part of the GREAT scholarships programme, sharing your experiences, ambitions on how you and your home country can benefit from your UK study.

Application Process

To be considered for the Sussex – GREAT Scholarship (Malaysia), you need to have received and accepted an offer of a place on an eligible Masters at Sussex. To apply for the scholarship, you will be required to provide a statement of academic interests.  You should include information about:

  • your drive and ambition
  • your potential for positive impact when you return to your home country
  • any relevant work experience , skills or extra-curricular activty that relate to your ambitions and/or chosen course

To be considered, you will need to demonstrate excellent grades in your most recent qualification. You do not need to have completed your qualification, however, as we can make conditional scholarship offers.

General Requirements

GREAT scholars must:

  • be a citizen of Malaysia.  
  • have an undergraduate degree, be motivated, and have an interest in the proposed subject area
  • meet the English language requirement of the UK HEI
  • establish an engagement with the UK as a scholar, through personal and academic fulfilment
  • be willing to attend a networking event of all UK based GREAT scholars, to discuss experiences and capture perceptions of studying in the UK
  • be willing to maintain contact with the British Council and their HEI and act as an ambassador for the GREAT Scholarships
  • as an alumnus of the GREAT Scholarships, be willing occasionally to speak to potential candidates about his or her own experience of studying in the UK.
