Course Overview

The native fauna of Malaysia, well known for its uniqueness and diversity, is an important component of the nation's natural heritage. Knowledge of their composition, distribution and population dynamics as well as in-depth understanding of their habitats and ecology are important prerequisites for developing sustainable management and effective conservation strategies. The Department of Zoology (DZ) at UNIMAS focuses on various important fields of research within zoology including animal systematics, ecology, conservation and management, biology, evolution, phylogeography, and bioinformatics. It currently offers one undergraduate programme, namely the Animal Resource Science and Management Programme.

The educational objectives of the department are to:
  • provide students with a firm foundation and required background in zoology
  • provide a sound understanding of the importance and contribution of wildlife species and their habitat to the country's socio-economic development
  • provide comprehensive knowledge and skills in the management and conservation of indigenous fauna resources

Entry Requirements

The minimum requirements for entry into most undergraduate programmes are as follows:

Good pass in the Sijil Peperiksaan Malaysia (SPM) with a credits in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia subject or a credits in Bahasa Melayu/Bahasa Malaysia July Paper and a pass in Sejarah subject (for SPM 2013 and above) in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM)

 

AND

 

A good pass in the Sijil Tinggi Peperiksaan Malaysia (STPM) with a minimum of:

  • Grade C (NGMP 2.00) in Pengajian Am; AND
  • Grade C (NGMP 2.00) in two (2) other subjects,

OR

A good pass in Sijil Matrikulasi KPM/Asasi Sains UM/ Asasi UiTM with a minimum

  • CGPA of 2.00

OR

A recognised Diploma in relevant fields

 

AND

 

Malaysian University English Test (MUET)

  • At least Band 1

Notes:

  1. Entry requirements into professional courses such as Medicine and Engineering are generally much higher. In addition there are also specific requirements for entry into certain programmes. Further details can be obtained from the relevant faculties.
  2. For foreign students, the general requirement is a good pass in A level, Matriculation, Higher School Certificates or other equivalent pre-university examinations. Malaysian Government Policy states that admission into certain degree programmes are restricted to local students only.
