Academic Strengths

Heriot-Watt University Malaysia offers courses in several fields, for instance, engineering, business, built environment and actuarial science, among others.

A mixed mode of teaching and assessments is practised in delivering course content. This includes assignments, tutorials, group projects, mentoring sessions and laboratory sessions, to name a few. This provides students with a more hands-on approach to the course content and allows them to put into practice what they have learnt.

Programme Outline

HERIOTWATT-EGM14(2).jpg

The current programme offering at Heriot-Watt University Malaysia includes foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. At the foundation level, there are two programmes offered: Foundation in Science and Foundation in Business and Design. At the undergraduate and postgraduate level, there are various programmes offered in varying fields, for instance, Engineering (Petroleum, Civil, Chemical, Mechanical), Built Environment (Construction Project Management and Quantity Surveying) as well as Business (Business Psychology, MBA, Business and Finance).

Heriot-Watt’s campuses in the UK and Dubai provide students the option to transfer campuses during their undergraduate studies.

These courses have all been adapted from the syllabus used at Heriot-Watt’s UK campuses to suit the Malaysian context, providing students access to a top-notch British education without them having to leave the country.

Additionally, the university works with professionals in the industry in developing and accrediting the curriculum. This practice ensures that the course content and learning materials used are up-to-date and relevant to industry requirements. This practice has ensured that Heriot-Watt graduates are industry ready upon completion of their studies.

Academic Facilities & Resources

Heriot-Watt University Malaysia is located in the beautiful garden city of Putrajaya, which plays host to many events, including the International Fireworks Competition, International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta and Red Bull Air Race World Championship, among others. Heriot-Watt University Malaysia’s Putrajaya campus is built on a 4.8-acre site on a picturesque lakeside location and incorporates many green features, the most distinctive of which is its “living green roof”. This campus currently has a student capacity of 4000, and is expected to be able to hold 6000 students once it has been fully-developed.

This campus was designed with the modern student in mind. Student meeting rooms and student common rooms are made available to students, giving them the opportunity to relax and socialise. The university’s two-storey library was also designed to cater to different student preferences. For instance, there are quiet study rooms for individual study, while group study and discussion areas are also made available for collaborative learning. The 365 room is provided for students who may have to study late on campus. This room is CCTV monitored and equipped with basic kitchen facilities.

Overlooking the lake and promenade are the university’s cafeterias, which provide students with many meal options. A bakery, coffee shop, bookshop, convenience store and other retail outlets are in the works as the campus is being continuously developed.

Student Support Services & Student Development Activities for Graduate Employability

The university’s student services staff provides guidance on a range of academic matters to ensure that students receive the right information. Responsibilities include administrative services, student records, examinations, enrolments, timetables and fee collections, to name a few.

There is also in place a student services centre for international students, the International Student Support Office (ISSO). ISSO assists international students in the various areas, from their student visa application to their arrival at the university.

Other services in place for students include counselling services, information services (pertaining to IT and library issues), career advisory services as well as recruitment and admissions.

These organisations include Shell Malaysia, Loh & Loh Corporation, and Great Eastern Life, to name a few.

Heriot-Watt University scholarships include the High Achiever Scholarship (HAS), and Financial Hardship Scholarship. The HAS is awarded to students based on the results of their previous level of study. These results determine the discount they receive on their fees. HAS is offered at the foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The Financial Hardship scholarship is awarded to students with excellent academic results who demonstrate financial hardship. This scholarship, too, is offered at all three levels.
