Institution Profile

Background of Institution

KDU University College

KDU, an institution that has over 32 years of history and experience, believes in providing quality wholesome and holistic education, and have traditionally been successful in preparing students for top universities all over the world.

Established in 1983, and a pioneer in Malaysian private education, KDU was one of the first private colleges in Malaysia to have its own purpose-built campus. It was the first education institution to introduce the concept of overseas twinning programmes to the country through its American Degree Program in 1983 and Business School in 1986.

The institution, as KDU College then, was awarded the university college status in August 2010 – a reflection of its offering of proprietary and twinning programmes, and the growth of its international student population.

In January 2015, KDU University College moved to its new flagship campus at Utropolis Glenmarie, with its state-of-the-art facilities and a contemporary teaching and learning environment. KDU University College offers a wide range of programmes at certificate, diploma, degree and master levels, and has introduced home-grown degree programmes that are at the forefront of growing industries, reflecting its promise of being a real-world university meeting real-world needs. These include hospitality, tourism and culinary arts, game development and computing, communications and creative arts, business, as well as engineering.

KDU College, situated at the Damansara Jaya campus, offers quality programmes with top universities around the world and continues to inspire its students to greater heights. Its close collaboration with top-ranking foreign university and education partners also ensures students of globally-recognised pre-university and bachelor degree qualifications that are equivalent to those awarded by the partners' home campuses. KDU students thus have the best of both worlds at their doorstep.

KDU University College and KDU College are members of Paramount Education, a fully-integrated education services provider for primary, secondary, tertiary, and postgraduate level studies as well as executive and professional development programmes.

Student Testimonials

Amanda Wan

School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts - Graduate of 2009, Valedictorian

Amanda is living her dreams as a professional bartender and was the first Malaysian girl and the only other lady out of 24 finalists, to compete at the Diageo Reserve World Class Finals 2010 held in Athens. This spunky lass knew what she wanted to do in life and pursued it endlessly. Not one to take “No” for an answer, Amanda shared, “I had to prove myself. That’s why the Diageo Reserve World Class Competition means a lot to me, because it proves that bartending is a real job, at many professional levels. It took a lot of perseverance, focus and hard work to reach this stage. But it has been a tremendous achievement so far, and I am so very excited about what lies ahead!”

Ann Lam Mei-Quan

Centre for Postgraduate & Research – Graduate of 2010, Valedictorian

Class of 2010 valedictorian, Ann Lam was headhunted by Vasseti Berhad upon completing the MBA in International Hospitality Management and is now a Management Executive there. Ann is inspired by people who are persistent in achieving their goals or their dreams. They are the ones who will bounce back on their feet when they fall, are always positive and will reflect on what they have learnt from their temporary setbacks.

Benette Lee One One

School of Computing, Communication & Media Studies – Graduate of 2010, First Class Honours

I wanted the best and I knew KDU could provide that for me, as it is renowned for their Mass Communication courses. I furthered my studies at Murdoch University under the KDU-Murdoch twinning programme and was awarded the Murdoch University Vice Chancellor\\\'s Commendation Academic Excellence Award.

Chin Ying Ying

School of Business & Law - Graduated of 2006, First Class Honours

I didn’t dream of myself becoming a lawyer when I was young.

My father once said that he’d be proud to have his daughter as a lawyer, for the glamour that the job entails. He was joking, of course. I guess back then he had already seen the traits befitting a lawyer in me – rebellious and argumentative. The three years of my studies in KDU College and final year in UTAS were challenging and at the same time, enriching. In 2006, I graduated with First Class Honours in LLB.

Upon graduation, I was offered an in-house counsel training opportunity with Shell Malaysia as a Legal Associate. Three years ago, I moved to Singapore and secured a regional position in the Legal Department of an MNC. As clichéd as it may sound, it’s true that there’s never an easy option in life but by bracing challenges with diligence and determination, the rewards will be fulfilling. With this, I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to my dear lecturers in KDU and my learned professors in UTAS for helping me to take me where I am today.

Awards received:
1) Lifetime membership with the Golden Key International Honour Society, UTAS
2) Tasmania International Scholarship, UTAS
3) Special Recognition Award, SHELL Malaysia

Fatin Nur Husnain Binti Zakaria

School of Engineering - Graduate of 2010, First Class Honours

Through my 4 years of studies here at KDU, I built up my confidence level and sharpened my leadership skills, and the environment here helped nurture me to be the person I am today. KDU has also given me the opportunity to represent the School of Engineering for the ENIGMA Competition hosted by Multimedia University (MMU), of which I obtained first place in the individual category. In KDU, we were always trained to be analytical and critical in our thinking, and I find that these traits are most essential in my present occupation.

Hardeep Singh Sandhu

Bachelor of Science in Accounting & Finance, London School of Economics

KDU was an amazing ride, always filled with a healthy balance of work and play! But what I cherish most is the group of loving, caring and dedicated lecturers who have made my journey a truly special one. It goes without saying that I owe my success to KDU for providing me a wholesome education by truly awesome educators!

Jamie Morais

School of Engineering - Graduate of 2002

A graduate in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Jamie is currently attached to Proton Malaysia. He was awarded the Best Delegate Award in the 2004 Model United Nation Conference organized by the University of Manchester, UK. Jamie also previously served as KDU Alumni president.

Joyce Chong

School of Computing, Communication & Media Studies – Graduate of 2005, First Class Honors

Since graduation, I have had worked as a Java Programmer, IT Security Technical Consultant, Business IT Analyst and now a Project Manager. Apart from being financially independent, I’m also glad that I’m now capable of contributing my knowledge to the less fortunate ones. To date, not only I have had left my footprints at Australia, Austria, Germany, Italy, Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, and United States. But also conquered the tallest mountain in Southeast Asia and dived with Whale Sharks.

I am very glad to have chosen the Bachelor’s Degree programme offered by Northumbria University at KDU University College. It provides well balanced subjects like IT programming, Management, Security, and Organizational Behaviour which helped me in my journey ascending the corporate ladder. I must say, I appreciate very much the commitment of knowledgeable lecturers in KDU, the variety of programmes available, and of course the great support of my family. Without them, all these will still remain as dreams. They fulfilled my DREAMS.

Lai Jen Li

School of Business& Law - Graduate of 2009

I would love to say that I graduated from KDU with a 2:1 because I was born naturally quite clever and hardworking, but the truth is that I did well because I had good guidance and a great support system in KDU. I could always turn to my lecturers anytime I needed a push in a direction which I was reluctant to go. They never turned down my requests for additional material or just a helping hand whenever I needed it. Many ask me why I chose KDU College instead of the more traditional or popular colleges which offer the UOL programmes and all I can say is this : the syllabus can be memorized and understood. But to learn that law can be fun, and to know that those who are there to guide you actually love to teach and want us to personally be the best that we can? It is irreplaceable and I was lucky to find that in KDU.

This love for law which KDU instilled in me remained throughout my Certificate of Legal Practice course. When I felt defeated from the sheer enormity of the syllabus, I was reminded of the values that have been passed to me by my lecturers in KDU. To persevere and to be ambitious- never settle for just a pass because everybody can do that. To always be my best. And that was how I passed my CLP and also managed to score the highest marks in Malaysia for my Civil Procedure paper.

Today I am practicing as a criminal lawyer. I have only gratitude and respect for my lecturers in KDU. I can only thank them for their guidance and their support throughout my “formative” years. And while I sit here writing this article, in my office, surrounded by piles of files and plenty of law books, sometimes overwhelmed but mostly honoured to be able to do the job that I have always dreamt of, I realise that KDU is indeed the college which has stuck true to its slogan “People Inspire People”.

Shirley Hoo

School of Hospitality, Tourism & Culinary Arts - Graduate of 1991

It is best remembered for how it nurtured me; I learnt discipline, self-reliance and decision-making. The extensive practical experience gained, complemented theory well and gave me truthful insights into the industry. Today, I am happy to be on the Executive Committee of Prince Hotel. Four years ago, I became the first hotelier to be accredited by IPRM. The KDU experience has well prepared me for my present position. To young aspirants in my field, I would advise them to develop consistency in their effort, determination and an ability to learn from failures. Mental strength goes a long way; thank you, KDU.

Soo Xinghan

Recipient of KDU Principal Scholarship and Murdoch University Vice Chancellor's Commendation Academic Excellence Award

I enjoy studying under the Murdoch B. Commerce programme at KDU, as it offers a great amount of flexibility in terms of its wide range of subjects and thus, broadening my scope of expertise. We also have the option take on the ‘Study at Home’ programme which allows us study in the Murdoch Perth campus for one semester, while paying Malaysian fees! This is a fantastic opportunity to experience life abroad at a more affordably rate. If you are looking to pursue your studies locally and planning to major in commerce or even communications, the Murdoch programme in KDU is definitely a choice you will not regret. By joining this course, you are becoming part of a community of bright minds. With the guidance of the ever helpful lecturers and peers, you will definitely find yourself inspired to perform. The fact that this programme is generally more affordable is just another bonus in addition to the list of benefits of doing this prestigious course.

Vincent Lee Ko Meng

Bachelor of Science in Accounting & Finance, London School of Economics

Size does matter! – Because KDU is not some massive university, the lecturers know you in person and they are able to assess your performance in your studies accurately. The part I find most helpful is their curriculum structure and teaching methods. The lecturers are really easy to get along with and they love and care about you, so like their own family.

Diane Vidot (Republic of Seychelles)

School of Business & Law – Graduate of 2011

I love the fact KDU and the course made me a more independent and confident person. The challenges I experienced has taught me so much! Being at KDU, I made many friends from various countries and experienced a myriad of cultures which I find very interesting. I come from a country where tourism is a booming industry and I believe what I learnt and picked up here at KDU, be it through academics or people, can help me go far when I head back to my country to kick start my career.

Shakhnoza Tashpulatova (Russia)

Centre for Postgraduate & Research

I chose this programme because of its diversity as an industry sector, which also means that it offers a wide range of career opportunities. Plus, I enjoy meeting people. Studying while pursuing my MBA not only allows me to get more in-depth understanding of this dynamic sector, but also allows me to immediately apply the concepts I learned from my study into my work. The reason I went back to school after more than 5 years is because I really believe in the value of education as a lifelong investment.
