Formed in 1996 by the merger of the University of London Examinations and Assessment Council (ULEAC) and the Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC), Edexcel was the first awarding body in the UK to offer both academic and vocational qualifications.

Regulated by the UK Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (www.qca.org.uk). Edexcel applies the same rigorous standards and quality procedures around the world as it does throughout the UK. GCE O-levels have changed with the times but never lost touch with the traditions that have made them such a popular and well understood qualification. Through the innovative spirit of Edexcel, institutions and students can rely on the preservation of academic standards with a modern focus.

GCSEs are the same academic level but have different assessment criteria. Some GCSE courses are modular whilst others are linear, and several, in addition, provide the opportunity to carry out coursework throughout the two year period.
