Presenting the ESMOD Kuala Lumpur Graduation Fashion Show 2024 – “ASTERIA”

April 8, 2024 | Campus News

An evening of rising stars took over LaLaport Bukit Bintang City Centre on April 1st, 2024.  The ESMOD Kuala Lumpur Graduation Fashion Show returned, featuring the newest batch of soon-to-be graduates who set the fashion runway on fire with their showstopping masterpieces. The exquisite collections of 11 up-and-coming fashion designers each showed great technicality, concept and storytelling.

This time around, the stage saw the students of batch FD2103 exhibiting incredible designs surrounding the theme of “Asteria” – the celestial goddess of the night sky and falling stars. Asteria’s myth with its celestial themes finds a unique resonance among these aspiring designers who are akin to stars shining brightly in their individual capacities. Like scattered stars, each bring their unique brilliance to the fashion landscape. Take a sneak peek into what they have in store on their Instagram (@asteria.2103).

They are: Zyrith Nur Aina binti Zainudin, Engku Nur Raihan, Priyatharsini A/P M Rajasurian, Bong Hui En, Catherine Hau Chin Yee, Arissrar Sangkhaney A/P Bun Liang, Peggy Yong, Hosini A/P Suntharajan, Idaini Nurisha binti Ikmal Hisham, Chan Xi Yu and Fong Pei Xien. When their talents converge, their collective brilliance forms a constellation of innovation and style that graces the fashion night sky.

During the Jury Week, these aspiring designers painstakingly prepared their showcase booth to impress the jury panel consisting of renowned names in the fashion design industry – Khoon Hooi (Creative Director of Khoon Hooi Couture), Bon Zainal (Founder of Bon-D), Jonathan Cheng (Founder of UnitedWood), Justin Yap (Founder of Justin Yap Atelier), and Paul Marchand (ESMOD Paris’ Head of Fashion Design).

This show was a celebration of their hard work, creativity and tireless efforts for the past three years. This time, a special guest all the way from France on a visit to ESMOD Kuala Lumpur, Véronique Beaumont, the COO of ESMOD International also attended the show. She, together with the principal of ESMOD Kuala Lumpur, Tatsun Hoi presented the awards to the winners.

During the award ceremony, she made sure to express how proud she was of these 11 students’ creations and efforts. Having witnessed the works of students hailing from 20 schools across 13 countries, as part of ESMOD International, she was impressed with the quality and standard of not only the garments but the show itself.

“We want to train professionals who are prepared for the evolution of the fashion industry and create sustainable fashion,” said Beaumont.

The winner of the “Best Fashion Design Award” went to Zyrith Nur Aina binti Zainudin for her collection ‘In the Mourning’. This collection conveyed the beauty within moments of mourning by incorporating a fusion of traditional Malay sarong, embellished with vintage elements like lace.

Catherine Hau Chin Yee's 'Zombie Doomsday' collection was honored with the "Best Pattern Making Award". Drawing inspiration from apocalyptic movies, each garment from this collection had a futuristic flair, characterized by asymmetrical cuts and vibrant materials.

The “Best Sustainable Fashion Award” addresses the current issue in the fashion industry and was awarded to Arissrar Sangkhaney A/P Bun Liang for her collection ‘Spirit Serenity’. The collection was made up of soft, delicate looks that embraced environmentally friendly attire.

Just as the evening was about to end, Véronique Beaumont personally shared her admiration for her favorite collection of the night, 'Manic Waste' by Engku Nur Raihan. Thus, this bold and abstract ensemble influenced by the backstory of The Batman’s Joker, caught her eye as she specially conferred the title, “Special Mention Award by ESMOD Paris”.

Our heartiest gratitude goes to sponsors Curated by CollabStore, Jakel Trading, Sony Malaysia, Tegas Broadcast & Multimedia, and National Board of Beauty (NBOB), as well as event support by Asia e University’s (AeU) School of Event Management for helping us pull off a spectacular ESMOD KL Graduation Fashion Show.

ESMOD Kuala Lumpur is under the umbrella of the world’s first and oldest fashion school in the world with over 180 years of history.
