Background of Institution

Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN)

Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) is a unique institution that focuses on engineering, information technology, business management and related areas. UNITEN not only prepares its graduates to become knowledgeable and competent professionals, but also develops them as well-rounded individuals with a broad intellectual outlook.

UNITEN is one of the first private universities in Malaysia and is wholly-owned by the public-listed Tenaga
Nasional Berhad (TNB), one of the largest utility companies in South East-Asia. UNITEN is moving rapidly towards establishing itself as a regional centre of educational excellence. The support and commitment it receives from its holding company, TNB, has enabled it to accelerate the infrastructure development of the campus.

The number of programmes it offers increases accordingly, in line with its commitment to serve the needs of the nation and other countries that look to Malaysia for assistance to meet their requirements for tertiary education. UNITEN strives to provide quality education to prepare students for positions in industry, commerce and academia. The comprehensive and innovative programme contents and teaching techniques are designed towards expanding the frontiers of learning. Students will be challenged to develop into multi-skilled professionals who possess mental, intellectual and emotional fortitude to succeed in life.

The curricula, further enhanced with project work, research, open-ended experiments and practical training, are designed with input from the industrial and commercial sectors as well as from local and foreign universities. The emphasis is towards producing professionals who can fulfill the needs of the industry of commerce in particular, and the nation in general.

All academic programmes are formulated to meet the academic requirements of the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA). In addition, engineering and accounting degree programmes are designed to satisfy the requirements of the relevant professional bodies. The selection of lecturers and advisory staff is based on their qualifications, professional experience, teaching expertise and professionalism, passion for their respective subjects and their commitment to share their knowledge and experience with the students.

The Sponsorship, Careers and Alumni Centre

Putrajaya Campus

Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN)

Accommodation

Comfortable and cosy apartments are available for students on campus. Over 3,800 students can experience the comfort and convenience of the accommodation units at any given time as they come with lounges and kitchens. The students can also sleep at night with peace of mind because of the round-the-clock security presence on campus provided by the university.

ICT Infrastructure

Strategically located computer labs can be found all over the university. At present, 20 state-of-the-art computer labs are in operation, providing the students with more than 1000 terminals to work with. The labs are interconnected, forming the university's Local Area Network (LAN). In addition, internet access is also available in the student apartments and students can enjoy unlimited connectivity and digital freedom with Wi-Fi connection which is available all over campus. UNITEN's ICT infrastructure is developed with the students' ICT needs firmly in mind.

Sports and Recreational Facilities

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. To prevent this from happening, a whole array of sports and recreational facilities has been provided by UNITEN for both its students and staff. These facilities are a welcome and much needed diversion from the rigours and stresses of studying and working. For a private university, the facilities are really remarkable. To begin with, the Main Stadium is an impressive sporting arena that meets the requirements of national level athletics competitions. Then, there is the Olympic-size swimming pool which is the centre of aquatic activities, while Dewan Seri Sarjana, a 3,000 seater hall, is the venue for both indoor sports, cultural activities and corporate events.

Library

UNITEN's library is one of the leading private university libraries in Malaysia, with a reputation for providing information resources and excellence in customer service. The resources and services of the library play a key role in enabling and supporting the high standard of learning, teaching, education and research at UNITEN.

The library's primary aim is to support students and staff of UNITEN in all areas of their study and work. It develops and maintains extensive printed and e-resources to support the research, teaching and learning activities of the University. The core collections encompass subjects in engineering, information technology, business management and accounting.

The library consists of 6 levels occupying a total floor area of approximately 18,645.2 square meters. It is among the biggest libraries in Southeast Asia and began its operation in 1997. It has a seating capacity of 1,074 users and spacious reading areas furnished with updated facilities and technology. Functioning in a setting of unique design, it serves as a blend of a conventional and modern, providing an aesthetically pleasing and conducive environment for study and research. The library collection has about 127,265 volumes and contains books, periodicals, serials, conference papers, reports, standards and non-book materials. The library's collection focuses on subjects such as engineering, computer science, and information technology.

Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Campus

Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN)

The story of UNITEN's other campus began on 15 February 2001. With the rapid growth of the main campus, UNITEN formed a branch campus in Bandar Muadzam Shah, at the south-eastern part of the state of Pahang, the largest state in Peninsular Malaysia.

Officially launched by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad on 4th May 2001, the college opened its doors to about 220 pioneer students in its first intake. On 4 October 2003, it was proclaimed as Kampus Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah (KSHAS) by His Royal Highness the Sultan of Pahang.

Following the concept of "Town University" and "University Town", KSHAS has the potential to be a catalyst towards the advancement of intellectual resources in accordance with the economic development of Bandar Muadzam Shah in Rompin District and the East coast of Peninsular Malaysia in general.

KSHAS offers bachelor and foundation programmes in Accounting, Finance, Entrepreneur Development, Marketing, Human Resource Management, and Business Studies under the College of Business Administration.

KSHAS functions as a bridge to connect its students and the dwellers of Bandar Muadzam Shah. It also serves as a medium of community, economic and intellectual development for Bandar Muadzam Shah and the surrounding areas.

Accommodation

At KSHAS, the accommodation is as immaculate as the scenery around campus. Each unit is an almost fully-furnished apartment and can accommodate four occupants. At any one time, the apartments can house up to 3,400 students.

ICT Infrastructure

Similar to the Putrajaya Campus, the ICT infrastructure in KSHAS was developed with the students' ICT needs firmly in mind. There are sufficient modern interconnected computer labs offering convenience for the students' computing needs. Wi-Fi and internet access in the accommodation units add to the appeal of UNITEN as a university of choice.

Sports and Recreational Facilities

The sports and recreational facilities in KSHAS also function as meeting points where students and staff mingle and unwind after a hard day's work. The tennis, volleyball and netball courts are well maintained even when they are always in use almost every evening. The futsal pitch is another popular venue among the KSHAS population with matches nearly every night. Finally, there is also the wall-climbing facility for the more extreme minded.

Library

The KSHAS library was officially launched by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed on 4 May 2001. Its major collection focuses on materials in business and accounting to support research and teaching for the College of Business Management and Accounting at degree levels.

Bachelor of Information Technology (Honours)

University of Tenaga Nasional is a beautiful university with excellent education facilities. It is well-equipped with adequate high technology necessities such as laboratories, computer laboratories, multimedia lecture rooms, tutorial rooms and many more. A conducive learning atmosphere is what I like most here - a smaller group of students in a class get equal attention from the lecturers. Besides that, the lecturers who were mostly ex-TNB engineers and professionals conduct their lectures in a very unique way, where practical knowledge and real life practices are being instilled into us. There are also extra curricular activities to help students to develop their minds, therefore producing not only intellectuals, but also ethical capable professionals with good personalities. In short, University of Tenaga Nasional is one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning that cater to all the needs of students, and I am very happy to be here.
