Raffles University Iskandar (RUI) is a joint venture between the Malaysian Government (through Educity Iskandar Malaysia Sdn. Bhd.) and Raffles Education Corporation (REC), a multi-national, educational company. REC was invited to be a partner in Educity because of our international expertise and reputation in design education.

The University was formally approved by Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) on 31st October 2011.

Currently operating from its temporary premises at Menara Kotaraya, Jalan Trus, Johor Bahru, Raffles University Iskandar will develop a state-of-the-art campus on a 65-acre plot of land in Iskandar Malaysia’s EduCity. Raffles University Iskandar’s strategic location in Iskandar sets the university in a secure and growing state economy with high potential in both economic and cultural developments. Students can expect a vibrant and dynamic nurturing learning experience that will see their transformation into world-class professionals.

Vision

Our vision is to be the premier University in Malaysia.

Mission

We are committed to provide quality education. This will be achieved by using the latest teaching and learning methodologies, action-based research, collaborating with industry, and engaging the community.

Academic Strengths

RUI02.jpgRUI03.jpg

Raffles University Iskandar is the University of the Future. We are at the cutting edge of higher education in both teaching and learning and business practices. Our innovative and stimulating programmes promote doing while learning and learning while doing. We achieve this through 5 key elements:

Personalised learning

Students are demanding personalised learning. That is, learning tailored to each student’s needs. RUI provides personalised learning through:

  • Small class sizes – small class sizes allow the lecturer to spend more time with each student and thus better understand their needs.
  • Studios – Studios are special classrooms where students undertake projects under supervision of a lecturer. Each student undertakes a different project. Students also work in teams on projects.

Developing students so they are industry ready

Industry is demanding students who are industry ready. At RUI we achieve this through:

  • Employing lecturers with a minimum of five years industrial experience. The high quality lecturers teach the practical side of the topics as well as the theory.
  • Working closely with industrial partners. We have over 30 industrial partners who help us deliver industry relevant programmes and ensure students have the skills needed by industry.
  • Accreditation by professional bodies, e.g. ACCA for Accountancy.

Practice-based programmes

Industry, parents and students are demanding student skills that are applicable to industry. At RUI we achieve this through:

  • Service learning: this is where students design and deliver a service in industry or the community during their studies. The students usually work in teams.
  • Industry and community projects:  Real projects are undertaken by students for industry and the community during their studies. These projects may be individual or group projects.
  • Work-based learning:  All our degree programmes have internships. This allows students to develop practical skills through on-the-job training.
  • Soft skill development: Developing students’ communication and presentation skills.

Developing students’ analytical thinking skills

The Industry is demanding that graduates be able to analyse business situations and solve problems. At RUI we achieve this by:

  • Reflective practice: students are taught how to reflect and record their reflections in a reflective journal. This helps them improve their learning and personal development.
  • Evidence-based problem solving: students are taught a unique evidence-based, decision-making approach to solving problems. This provides a sound grounding for them to solve real-world problems. The approach aims at optimisation: improving operations and productivity, reducing costs, etc.

Developing students’ creative and innovative skills.

Industry and students are demanding that students be able to create new designs of products and services and commercialise them. At RUI we achieve this by:

  • Design thinking: students are taught the design process and how to apply it to create new product designs and to design/re-design services.
  • Entrepreneurship: students are taught how to commercialise their designs and start up a new business.
