Institution Profile

Background of Institution

Background Information / Date Established

In 1991, GMI was established as advanced skill training center to produce skilled technologist in responding to the growing and substantial demand for highly competent industrial manpower. GMI provides a comprehensive and well-balanced training of practical and theoretical. The institute offers a broad-based engineering education, with opportunities for specialization and self-directed learning and development.

GMI University Aerial View

GMI is the first of its kind in many aspects. Firstly, in 1st September 1992, GMI is formally registered as a Company Limited by Guarantee by the Governments of Malaysia and the Federal Republic of Germany. The Malaysian Government, through its central agencies, the Economic Planning Unit and Treasury, contributes in defraying the development and operating costs of GMI, while MARA under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development is the local counterpart organization in this joint venture. Meanwhile, the Government of the Republic of Germany, through the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and the German Agency for Technical Cooperation, provides grants for the purchase of equipment as well as the necessary technical expertise to initially manage the institute and train local Malaysians as trainers and skilled technicians.

Secondly, the Board of GMI consists of representatives not only from Government agencies and public training institutions but from the industry as well. Such a set-up has been deliberately conceived in order to promote public and private sector linkages and cooperation as producers and consumers skills, respectively. This will help ensure a matching of the supply and demand for skills required by the industrializing economy.

Thirdly, GMI is pioneering a learning concept that blends practical skills and knowledge with sound theoretical grounding. This will allow the GMI graduates to be able to adapt to the world of work with greater competence and flexibility, and will hopefully contribute to the nation's industrialization efforts.

GMI University Programme Guide

GMI offers three programs which are pre-university and diploma programs. Pre-University programs are known as German A-Level Preparatory Program (GAPP). It was established in 2001 to increase the interest of young Malaysians to further their study in the fields of engineering.

We have two departments for our diploma programs which are Production Technology and Industrial Electronic Technology. Production Technology Department organizes intensive engineering technology diploma programs which cover prominent areas in machining and manufacturing with high quality industrial standards of training. Achieving such standards, require industrial experienced and skilled personnel, and investment in modern and equipment to accommodate design manufacturing activities.

Industrial Electronic Department offers engineering technology programs that support multi-sectors for Malaysian industry to realizing the global trends in manufacturing and services due to the growing number of application. This is to ensure students are kept abreast with the latest technology.
