GMI was established in 1992 and started with only 59 students for the first intake. Due to the high demand for technical course especially when the joined venture and assistance from Germany. Increasing demand from industries and public made GMI ready for the bigger capacity of students including short-term and part-time course. Later on GMI is officially officiated by then the 4 th Prime Minister of Malaysia Y.A.B Dato’ Seri Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad in 1994.
2008, GMI expanded and shifted to her new 75-acres campus with advanced training facilities located in Kajang, Selangor. The move to Kajang only drove GMI to be more motivated and persevere to achieve and succeed in mission and vision.
The institute is governed by a Board of Directors composed of 10 representatives from the industry and also the government bodies where the founders are Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) and Malaysian German Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MGCC). GMI’s training philosophy, approach and equipment carry significant German influences and all trainings at the institute uphold the hands-on, practice-based concept by adopting the German dual education system. However, throughout the years, GMI had changed her training approach from the traditional teacher-centered to a student-centered and again transformed from the Problem Based Learning (PBL) to the current Problem-Project-Production Based Learning (Pro3BL) approach.
In 1994, GMI was officially opened by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, YAB Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed.
