ICOM-SMH9-2.jpg

International College Of Music (ICOM) was established in November 1995 when it received its permit to operate from the Ministry of Education, Malaysia. It occupies six floors with a net usable space of approximately 1,500 square metres and is located within the capital city of Kuala Lumpur.

ICOM is the foremost college to be established in Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific region that offers formal education in contemporary music up to tertiary level. It aims to upgrade the standard of teaching in the art and science of music in Malaysia and also promote local musical talent and expertise in the international arena.

ICOM believes that formal music education is crucial because it relates oneself to society, enhances creativity and increases the level of musicianship. The rationale for establishing ICOM is to educate, develop and groom students to be professional musicians.

It is ICOM’s aim to produce professionals who are equal if not better than their counterparts elsewhere in the world. It is ICOM’s vision to present Malaysian musicians and other musicians in the region at the forefront of the international music industry.

ICOM’s goal is to be established as a regional centre of higher education in music and promote Malaysia as the centre of excellence in higher education for the Asia- Pacific region.

The college’s commitment to contemporary music education is evident by the large capital investment of over RM50 million towards the college’s programmes and facilities. Its faculty members are highly experienced in the field of music and each member brings with them actual industry experience to the class room.

Student Testimonials

Nick Hogan, Singapore

Berklee Transfer Program (BTP), 2 Years

My passion for music made me pluck up the courage to abandon the conventional path and become a musician instead.

My parents were surprised (to say the least) over my choice, and it took me much time and energy to convince them of my need to follow my passion. They fi nally relented on the condition that I enrol for a degree in music. Our search within Singapore for a reputable contemporary music school yielded in nought, but through an internet search, we discovered the Berklee College of Music, a well known college in the United States of America. Further search led us to the International College Of Music (ICOM) which is located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, about 250 miles north of Singapore.

Considering the fact that ICOM enjoys an exclusive articulation agreement with Berklee to enable students to transfer credits to Berklee, we chanced on this option and visited the college and were impressed with the facilities. It didn't take us long to decide, as ICOM had a successful track record of offering the 2-year programme called 'Berklee Transfer Programme' (BTP) and also it provided us with a 75% tuition fee saving opportunity. Thus began my education at ICOM.

Many don't realise how rigorous a music degree can be, but college life at ICOM is hectic and is quite demanding both academically and musically - one really has to practice and study. Overall I am really happy at ICOM and I look forward to becoming a better musician and a better person with each passing day. I also know that when I transfer to Berklee next year, I will have been well prepared to enjoy and benefit from the Berklee experience.

Jemo Sitanayah, Indonesia

Berklee Transfer Program (BTP)

I had a dream. I wanted to be on the stage and have an audience stand and congratulate me with their applause. I wanted to become a star and I did. I represented my country (Indonesia) in 1996 at the Asia Oceania Yamaha Electone Festival in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

My fi rst experience in Kuala Lumpur made me fall in love with the country. It is a beautiful place with nice food and great people. After completing my Bachelor of Business Administration Degree, I decided to come to the International College of Music (ICOM) and enrol in the Berklee Transfer Program (BTP) in September 2001. Everything was just so new for me. I learned a lot of new music theories that I never knew before. I started to learn jazz and got the opportunity to watch a lot of great performances especially by the amazing Malaysia Philharmonic Orchestra at the Petronas Twin Tower Concert Hall. It is one of the best concert halls in the world.

As an International Student, ICOM provided me with excellent opportunities and a lot of confidence. It helped prepare me to go to Berklee College of Music in Boston. With its excellent faculty, ICOM is definitely one of the best places to study contemporary music.
