International College Of Music (ICOM) was established in November 1995 when it received its permit to operate from the Ministry of Education, Malaysia. It occupies six floors with a net usable space of approximately 1,500 square metres and is located within the capital city of Kuala Lumpur.
ICOM is the foremost college to be established in Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific region that offers formal education in contemporary music up to tertiary level. It aims to upgrade the standard of teaching in the art and science of music in Malaysia and also promote local musical talent and expertise in the international arena.
ICOM believes that formal music education is crucial because it relates oneself to society, enhances creativity and increases the level of musicianship. The rationale for establishing ICOM is to educate, develop and groom students to be professional musicians.
It is ICOM’s aim to produce professionals who are equal if not better than their counterparts elsewhere in the world. It is ICOM’s vision to present Malaysian musicians and other musicians in the region at the forefront of the international music industry.
ICOM’s goal is to be established as a regional centre of higher education in music and promote Malaysia as the centre of excellence in higher education for the Asia- Pacific region.
The college’s commitment to contemporary music education is evident by the large capital investment of over RM50 million towards the college’s programmes and facilities. Its faculty members are highly experienced in the field of music and each member brings with them actual industry experience to the class room.
ICOM has international students from 20 over countries including the USA, Canada, Iran, India, Indonesia and Singapore. International students comprise 38% of the student body at ICOM making it one of the few music colleges in the world with such a rich eclectic mix of students.
In line with Vision 2020 and the Malaysian government’s directive to the private sector to contribute to the development of education in the country, ICOM is serious and diligent in its responsibilities to make Malaysia the regional centre of educational excellence in music.
