About the Institution

Open University Malaysia (OUM) was founded to provide higher education opportunities to those who believe that acquiring new knowledge and skills is a valuable investment for their career and future. Established in August 2000, the University is owned by a consortium of the first 11 public universities in Malaysia.
As the nation’s premier open and distance learning institution, OUM offers an alternative pathway to quality higher education that allows learners to study without compromising their work or personal responsibilities.
OUM has cumulatively enrolled more than 180,000 learners from diverse backgrounds, such as teachers, nurses, uniformed personnel, entrepreneurs, corporate executives, celebrities and even prison inmates. To date, the University has produced about 85,000 graduates.
Recognised by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency, Public Service Department and various professional bodies, the University’s programmes cover a broad range of disciplines in business and management, applied sciences, and education and social sciences.

Student (Local and International) Support Services
All OUM learners are part-time learners and they can easily access support services through myINSPIRE, the University’s learning management system. myINSPIRE provides access to learning materials, discussion forums, video lectures, digital library resources, academic and financial records, course schedules and many more.
Local learners can also visit more than 30 of our learning centres nationwide, where they can enjoy a conducive learning environment, meet up with peers and seek assistance from the University staff. All learning centres are located in major towns and strategic locations, making it easy for anyone to reach the University.
Internationally, OUM learners can enjoy support from the University's partner institutions in countries like the Maldives, Sri Lanka, Somalia, Vietnam, Zambia and others.

The Student Experience
At OUM, the learner-centred approach emphasises accessibility, affordability and flexibility. Learners can study independently using myINSPIRE, the University’s learning management system, which allows them to manage their schedules, access learning resources and interact with their peers and tutors via online forums.
Due to the pandemic, the University has also initiated the fully online mode since March 2020. Classes, examinations, presentations, discussions and even viva voce sessions have successfully taken place virtually, thus proving that with the right technology, tools and infrastructure, anyone, anywhere can learn at OUM.

MBOT : Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) is one of the new professional body that gives Professional Recognition to Technologists and Technicians in related technology and technical fields. Based on Act 768, MBOT expands its function vertically and horizontally whereby MBOT looks at technology-based profession that cuts across discipline based from conceptual design to a realized technology and covers from Technicians (with SKM/Diploma Level) up to Technologists (Bachelor’s Degree level and above).

DOSH: BOSHM graduates can claim for their green book from DOSH without need to attend the SHO courses at NIOSH and sit for the SHO examination.

Board of Counsellor Malaysia: Master of Counselling meets the Malaysia Board of Counsellor (LKM) Accreditation Criteria:-
- 13 subjects are conducted on 42 hours face-to-face seminars
- 2 subjects involved Practicum and Internship
- Fulfill the requirement hours for Practicum (240 hours) and Internship (504 hours).
Graduates are eligible to apply for the license as a registered counsellor from Malaysia Board of Counselling

![]() Y. Bhg. Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Anuwar AliPresident/Vice-Chancellor , Open University Malaysia (OUM) Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Anuwar Ali is one of the leading figures in Malaysian academia. He is currently the President/Vice-Chancellor of Open University Malaysia (OUM) and Chief Executive Officer of Multimedia Technology Enhancement Operations Sdn Bhd (METEOR), the holding company of OUM. Prior to joining OUM, he was the Director of the Higher Education Department at the Ministry of Higher Education (1995-1998) and later, moved on to become the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Anuwar began his career as an Assistant Director at the then Ministry of Trade and Industry in 1970. Three years later, he joined UKM as a tutor at the Faculty of Economics. His career with UKM spanned over 30 years where he held various posts including the Dean of the Faculty of Economics and Deputy Vice-Chancellor before his appointment as the Director of Higher Education. During his tenure as the Vice-Chancellor of UKM, he strived to uplift the status of the university to where it is now – a world-class institution. He was actively involved in research and publications particularly in the field of industrial and technological development. In recognition of his expertise, he was appointed as a consultant to prepare the Industrial Master Plan (1986-1995), Action Plan for Technology Development and the Action Plan for Small and Medium Scale Industries for the Malaysian government. He was also the Chairman of the Malaysian Examination Council, member of the Securities Commission and board member of SIRIM Training Services Sdn Bhd. Professor Emeritus Tan Sri Anuwar was born in Jasin, Melaka, on 11 July 1946. He received his primary education in Tanjung Malim, Perak, and Jasin, Melaka, before joining the Melaka High School. He graduated with a BSc (Economics) degree from the Queen's University in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1970. During his early years as a tutor and lecturer at UKM, he furthered his studies and obtained his masters and PhD from the University of Leicester and University of Kent, Canterbury, United Kingdom. |
