Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin formerly known as
Universiti Darul Iman Malaysia (UDM) is the
eighteenth public university in Malaysia.
Established on 1 January 2006, it is the
first university to be based on the “cluster”
concept. UDM aims to be an internationally
recognised institute of higher learning that
produces future leaders who are talented,
trained, well-educated, and have high
regards for culture and high morality, plus
a towering personality.
It has three campuses, each with a separate and identifiable niche. KUSZA Campus focuses on teaching and research in Islamic knowledge together with conventional studies as well as professional courses such as Accountancy, Law and Engineering. The City Campus offers Allied Health Sciences programmes such as Nursing, Radiography and Medical Laboratory Technology. The Besut Campus which is still in the pipeline will focus on Agriculture and Bio Technology programmes.
It is hoped that UDM can produce leaders in various fields through knowledge, openness, responsibility and an appreciation of diversity to benefit all. UDM also aims to shape talented leaders who are both knowledgeable and cultured, with an international outlook.
Academic facilities are given the utmost
attention. UDM provides classrooms,
tutorial rooms, seminar halls and workshop
facilities that are conducive to the learning
process. In addition, other facilities directly
related to learning are also provided. These
include a library, language labs, computer
labs and other facilities commonly found in
higher learning institutions in this country.
Students’ Accommodation
To create a comfortable learning
environment for the students, the
management has built four residence
colleges. Three of these are located at the
KUSZA Campus, while the other is located
at the Kota Campus. There are 38 blocks
with a total of 2379 rooms at the KUSZA
Campus while there are two blocks with 44
rooms at the Kota Campus.
On average, each room accommodates two students. This conducive environment allows ample space for both study and rest. Overall, these four residence colleges can accommodate approximately 4,800 students. Cafeteria facilities are also provided for both students and staff of UDM.
Sports and Recreation
UDM has a multi-purpose gymnasium
for sports such as badminton, squash,
volleyball and general exercise. Facilities
for other main sports include a hockey field,
tennis courts, sepak takraw courts, archery
fields and football fields among others.
Library
The main library is located at the KUSZA
Campus and can accommodate up to 300
users at a time. Its capacity will increase
once expansion work is carried out. The
library collection holds nearly 140,000
items including books, journals, magazines
and newspapers. There is also a mini library
at the Kota Campus.
