Local Celebrity, Lawrence Wong, is a Friend of KDU Department of Communication and Media Studies
August 12, 2011 | Campus NewsPETALING JAYA, 8 August 2011 – KDU University College’s Department of Communication and Media Studies has a new Friend to welcome and it is none other than local celebrity, Lawrence Wong (王冠逸)!
Lawrence needs no introduction to the Chinese entertainment industry in both Malaysia and Singapore, as he started modeling and acting at a young age and has been persistently working in the industry in Singapore for more than 10 years, starring in television shows such as @Moulmein High, The Promise, Living With Lydia 2, True Files and Life Story, just to name a few.
Back in Malaysia where he now calls KL home, this 29-year-old talented actor / singer / model, who graduated with a Bachelor of Mass Communication from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia, is currently a leading actor in Malaysian Chinese TV dramas, such as NTV7’s Tribulations of Life (浮生劫) and 8TV’s A Time to Embrace (追影。筑梦). He will also be appearing as the lead in some upcoming dramas such as Viva La Model (天幕迷情) on 8TV and Black Sunset (黑色夕阳)on NTV7.
So, what compelled Lawrence to take up this role as a Friend of KDU Communication and Media Studies, and what exactly does this role entail?
Benny Lim, Academic Department Head for Communication and Media Studies, explained, “KDU Department of Communication and Media Studies is all about creating valuable experience for our students by being the trendsetter. Besides providing quality education, we inspire and support our students to initiate projects, be it mini TV series, podcast, magazines or events,” he said.
Continuing, he said, “As such, we find Lawrence to be the perfect role model for our students, as his vast experience in and extensive knowledge of the industry will be able to help enrich and enhance their studying experience.”
For Lawrence, his decision to join venture with KDU University College and be a Friend of KDU Communication and Media Studies, stems mainly from his shared belief of KDU’s tagline ‘People Inspire People’.
He believes that his role will help to inspire and build up the students’ repertoire and in so doing, build up the industry. “The communication and media industry is ever evolving and trends are fast-changing, be it locally or within the Asia Pacific. Everything is possible in this industry that is fuel-ed only and solely by your passion and limited only by your imagination,” Lawrence said.
He hopes that, in this capacity as a Friend of KDU Communication and Media Studies, he will be able to be the bridge to connect with the students as someone who inspires them and keep their passion going, as well as giving them advice on the latest opportunities.
The communication and media industry is a fast-paced and exciting one, Lawrence said, and together with KDU Communication and Media Studies, he is committed to transform KDU students into the trendsetters of the industry tomorrow.
KDU Department of Communication and Media Studies currently runs a Diploma in Mass Communication programme and its Diploma in Entertainment Arts, which will provide training to those who wants a performing career in the ever-evolving entertainment industry, will be offered early next year.
On top of that, it also runs the Murdoch (3+0) Bachelor of Communication programme with specialization in either Public Relations or Communication & Media. It’s very first homegrown KDU Bachelor of Mass Communication programme with 5 possible majors will be welcoming its inaugural intake of students this September.
