Contemporary Art Industry is Growing, Says Nazri
July 11, 2013 | National NewsKUALA LUMPUR: The 1Malaysia Contemporary Art Tourism Festival (1MCAT) was a success and its critics have been proven wrong, says Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz.
He said it was not easy when the ministry first launched the festival in 2010 as critics argued that contemporary art had nothing to do with tourism.
“Contemporary art may not immediately come across as a common tourism product, but 1MCAT does fill a gap in the tourism sector as a distinct niche product with the potential of capturing the hearts and minds of visitors and locals alike,” he said at the launch of the festival at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre yesterday.
He said Malaysia’s contemporary art industry was growing and the 1MCAT highlighted the best of what the industry had to offer and gave the local artists the limelight that they deserved.
