July 22, 2013 | National News

PUTRAJAYA: Islamic and Asian Civilisation studies will be introduced at private higher learning institutions soon.

Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the programmes, currently being taught in public universities, would be extended to universities and colleges in the private sector to create better understanding of different faiths and societies.

It is learned the cabinet had approved the idea to expand the studies to private higher education institutions recently.

"The programme is not to convert non-Muslims to Islam, but to build stronger unity among those of different backgrounds and religions by learning the values that push them to become outstanding civilisations.

"By better understanding the moral values of all faiths, it can tear down prejudices and build better understanding and stronger unity in our country," he said before breaking fast with employees of the Education Ministry.

Muhyiddin, who is also the deputy prime minister, said living in a society of different backgrounds and faiths, the ministry had its work cut out to turn education into an effective tool to unite the people.
