July 22, 2013 | National News

ASTANA: Malaysians will have a chance to study in Kazakhstan's fastest growing capital once Nazarbayev University opens its doors to overseas students next year.

Located in the vibrant Astana city, in the province of Akmola, the new university initiated by Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazerbayev currently has about 200 faculty members and 2,000 students.

Vice-rector Dr Simon Jones said the two-year-old university aimed to become the best research centre in Central Asia and has eight partners from top 30 universities in the world.

They are Cambridge University, Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania University, National University of Singapore, University College London, University of Wisconsin Madison, Pittsburgh University ad Duke University.

"These universities work with us in trying to deliver a new type of university for a developing country. It is a new and exciting adventure but the best universities draw students from all around the world.

"In our case, we have managed to enrol students from this area of Kazakhstan but in the near future we want to reach out to the world and get the best and most talented people no matter where they are from to be in this adventure," he said when met at the university recently. The university's vision is to train professionals who will be able to contribute to the research, education, and the national economy.
