AIESEC Curtin Sarawak Chapter carrying out waste management project in Miri

Miri – 17 December 2013 – AIESEC Curtin Sarawak Chapter of Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) will be organising a month-long waste management project throughout Miri from 16 December 2013 to 18 January 2014.

The project entitled TechCycle Tech4ALL is in collaboration with Sols Tech 24/7, Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak (NREB), E-Concern Sdn. Bhd., Computer Sales and Service Association, Sarawak Miri Branch and Sarawak Shell Berhad. It will also be supported by international Exchange Participants (EPs) of AIESEC from India and Indonesia as well as members of JCI Lutong.

The AIESEC project team members consist of mechanical engineering students Adrian Ooi Eng Hui, 25, Ho Chee Hoi, 19, Jack Sim Sheng Jie, 21, Jessica Yong, 21 and Fong Ai Ling, 21; accounting and finance students Carven Yong Jui Ming, 20, Samuel Achi, 20 and Andrew Yong, 20; and chemical engineering student Koh Boon Yew, 22.

The objectives of the project are to create awareness of waste management and its effect in the Miri community, raise awareness of recycling e-waste among electronic users (the project involves collecting SW 110 category electronic waste), provide the international exchange participants a unique local experience, as well as encourage the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) of waste management within the community. 

According to the Department of Environment’s Regulation 2, SW 110 waste is defined as electrical and electronic assemblies containing components such as accumulators, mercury-switches, glass from cathode-ray tubes and other activated glass polychlorinated biphenyl-capacitors, or contaminated with cadmium, mercury, lead, nickel, chromium, copper, lithium, silver, manganese or polychlorinated biphenyl.

From 16 to 28 December 2013, the AIESEC project team will be conducting talks on waste management in longhouses in Miri. This will be followed by workshops and exhibitions at Bintang Megamall as well as door-to-door e-waste collection from 10 to 11 January 2014 and on-site collection of e-waste at the Miri Indoor Stadium car park on 12 January.

Meanwhile, from 13 to 25 January, they will carry out seminars and awareness programmes on recycling in various private institutions of higher learning and secondary schools. On 18 January, there will be a camp at the Curtin Sarawak campus for students from private institutions of higher learning and secondary schools. The activities include talks, competitions, recycling events and beach cleaning.

Curtin Sarawak was the first higher education institution in East Malaysia to have an AIESEC chapter. AIESEC has some 60 years’ experience in providing avenues for youth leadership development. With over 60,000 members from more than 110 countries, it allows young people to participate in leadership and internship opportunities in a global learning environment and is entirely run by youth for youth.
