February 13, 2014 | Campus News

10 January 2014, KUALA LUMPUR – Approximately 2,000 Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (‘TAR University College’) students from 13 Diploma programmes demonstrated their perseverance and resilience for a noble cause by undertaking a fund-raising project under the guidance of their lecturers as part of the coursework requirement for the subject ‘Civic Consciousness and Volunteerism’ in order to help the needy and underprivileged. Their charitable action had successfully raised RM63,680.70, of which RM51,000 was disbursed to three selected charity organisations which were Mercy Malaysia (specifically for the Haiyan Typhoon victims in the Philippines), MyKasih Foundation  and Rumah Titian Kaseh, with each receiving RM17,000 in a cheque presentation ceremony held at TAR University College Kuala Lumpur Main Campus today.

The fund-raising project aims to inculcate civic values among the students, with the hope of producing a generation of young Malaysians who are able to contribute positively to the growth of the nation. For preparation, the students took 2 months to seek sponsorships, undergo training and rehearsing for their respective roles to raise funds as well as go from places to places in the campus to sell items raise fund. On 4 – 7 December 2013, the students were in the throes of fund-raising effort, organising a series of activities which included talent-time, walk for charity, senamrobic, games for charity and selling of various items in the campus.

Datuk Dr Tan Chik Heok, President of TAR University College, at the cheque presentation ceremony highlighted: “Besides the cultivation of civic responsibilities, our students have also learnt valuable lessons about altruism, team work, leadership, friendship, discipline and time management.  In this age of rapid progress of science and technology, the call for charity is much needed to ensure that the materialistic progress that we are achieving today stands parallel to the development of civic values, which are the development of the core values of humanity and civilization”.

The cheque presentation ceremony saw an attendance of close to 100 comprising the representatives from Mercy Malaysia, MyKasih Foundation and Rumah Titian Kaseh who were present to receive the cheques from Datuk Dr Tan. Apart from the three beneficiaries, the remainder of the fund will be channeled in cash, food items or educational items to the homes for the elderly and a crisis and drop-in centre for at-risk children in Chow Kit.
