February 19, 2014 | Campus News

Last month, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) presented a collection of books to the Tun Hussein Onn Library of Sunway University. The collection of 45 books, authored and co-authored by Dr. Daisaku Ikeda, President of Soka Gakkai International were presented to Professor Graeme Wilkinson, Vice-Chancellor of Sunway University by Johnny Ng, Chairman of Soka Gakkai Malaysia. The book donation was in conjunction with SGM’s on-going Book Donation Campaign involving 30 institutions which was launched in 2013.

Professor Wilkinson in his speech expressed that he is very privileged to be staying in Malaysia where there have been many decades of peace and stability while many people in some parts of the world live lives blighted by war and destruction. “Peace is a very important subject. We need to foster peace, in a peaceful co-existence we gain so much and we therefore need to do much to preserve it. And with SGM being an organisation that advocates peace through social engagements where it promotes a harmonious and civil society, through the donation of books provide resource to Sunway students to further inspire them to understand this culture of peace” said Professor Graeme.

Johnny Ng, in his speech presented a brief profile of Daisaku Ikeda and his works. “We are presenting some of these books to Sunway University today, in the hope that the wisdom of these dialogues could be shared to more people in our society, especially the younger generation, and put into practice to bring lasting peace and happiness to humanity” said Ng. “President Ikeda always considers education to be the culminating undertaking of his life. It will be our utmost joy and highest honour if these books will benefit generations after generations of students at the Sunway University,” he added.

Following the book presentation was a peace forum on Daisaku Ikeda’s 2013 Peace Proposal to the United Nations by Tan Leng and Wong Wai Leong from SGM. Wong, who is also a lecturer with Sunway University in the A-Level programme explained that education is important to nurture one’s heart and mind. They are limitless possibilities for each and everyone to contribute to society. Citing the active Sunway Volunteer Society as a reference, he said volunteer activities help students learn to appreciate the inner joys of doing something for others, promoting good values and morals. This is in tune with SGM’s pursuit to foster awareness of shared responsibility for the future of our country and the peace of all humanity. The Sunway Volunteer Society is a volunteer group that strives to aid the community through various outreach initiatives. The group’s ethos is to be a group that impacts the lives of others in a positive manner.

The collection of books is available at the Tun Hussein Onn Library.
