Baking fun for Filipino students

March 27, 2014 | Campus News

11 students aged 14 to 17 from the La Salle Green Hills School in Manila took part in a fun-filled baking workshop conducted by a DISTED College lecturer.

The activity was held in conjunction with a one week student exchange programme in Penang organized by SMK St Xavier for the Filipino youngsters, which included a heritage walk in historic George Town and attending classes at the school.

Workshop facilitator and DISTED lecturer Chan Wye Kok, who has 17 years’ experience in teaching pastry making, said: “It was a pleasure to better acquaint the eager students to the passion of baking and pastry art.”

“I hope the learning stint had given the young foreign visitors an added fond memory of their trip to Penang, which is a well-known food haven for tourists.”

Chan told the participants: “With increasing demand for healthy and ingredients-enhanced products, there is need for bakers to blend their craft with nutritional know-how to produce more baked varieties to seize new market opportunities.”

Accompanying the students were their counsellor Loida Faye Borbon and science teacher Jason Francis Villanucuq,

Loida remarked: “The Choux paste and cream puff making activity was meaningful as cooking and baking is a compulsory subject in our school.”

Jason added: “The workshop was an exciting hands-on learning experience to boost our students’ interest in pastry art.”
