Proposal for partially self-designed postgraduate program in physical chemistry/sciences

June 30, 2014 | Editor's Desk

Proposal for partially self-designed postgraduate program in physical chemistry/sciences involving the following sequential approach:

(A) Involvement in some experimental measurements o develop a feel for physical systems in the fluid state by basic, high precision measurement of some physic-chemical properties of binary mixtures (of organic compounds and ionic liquids).  This exposure might also draw attention to the investigator to determine phenomena that he might like to do research in.  The quantities measured include ultrasonic speeds, densities, viscosity, surface tension, thermal heart conduction, refractive indices and others if facilities and equipment become available.

At this point in time, after (A) has been completed, the student should be in a position to determine what type of research he wishes to pursue subject to the availability of expertise that can be derived from discussions. Currently, various types of MD studies are feasible, but (B) involves more topics after module (A) has been completed.

(B) Investigation of systems using classical MD (molecular dynamics), followed by various DFT techniques as these become available in the coming year of systems found in (A) above or else for other systems of interest to the research student.
