Graduation UK event celebrates graduates of British universities

KUALA LUMPUR, 20 September 2014: Malaysians who graduated from British universities had a chance to share a special moment with their family and friends at the Graduation UK event held at the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac).

British Council country director for Malaysia Gavin Anderson said that the inaugural Graduation UK event was aimed at giving graduates a chance to attend a formal ceremony that they might have missed after completing their studies.

“Graduation ceremonies in the UK usually happen several weeks after a student graduates and some people do not get the opportunity to attend it for reasons like visa validity or financial constraints.

“Whether they graduated this year or many years ago, they can share that special occasion with their family and friends without having to travel back to the UK,” said Anderson.

About 150 Malaysians who had graduated from UK universities attended the event that was jointly organised by the British High Commission and the British Council.

Commenting on the inaugural event, Acting British High Commissioner to Malaysia Ray Kyles said:

“Education truly is at the heart of the bilateral relationship between the UK and Malaysia. This is evident in the hundreds of partnerships between UK and Malaysian universities and colleges. There are some 15,000 Malaysian currently studying in the UK and 58,000 students in Malaysia studying for a UK tertiary qualification.”

During the event, British Graduate Association of Malaysia president Dato' Low Bin Tick and Chevening Alumni Association of Malaysia president Nithi Nesadurai also shared their experience of studying in the UK.

Graduates and their guests also attended talks and a networking session held after the formal ceremony. More information about the event is available at www.graduationuk.com.my.
