Keysight Technologies – Curtin Sarawak Reference Laboratory launched

November 3, 2014 | Campus News

The laboratory is a collaborative effort between Curtin Sarawak and Keysight Technologies, Inc., the world's leading electronic measurement company. It is aimed at enhancing research and teaching and learning in Curtin Sarawak’s School of Engineering and Science, as well training young graduates and professional engineers in the use of electronic measuring devices and instrumentation applications for the Oil & Gas and power-generation industries in Sarawak.

Representing Keysight Technologies at the launch was Ee Huei Sin, Vice President – General-purpose Electronics Measurement Division and Gooi Bor Chun, Worldwide Marketing Director; Hanita Ibrahim, University Programme Manager, and Hing Wai Leong, Agilent Technologies Channel Manager. Also present were Chew Teck Ming, Kamal Ariffin, Dr. Dasline Sinta and Choo Wai Heng representing Keysight Technologies’ partners, Dreamwave Technologies and Dreamcatcher Malaysia.

Meanwhile, representing Curtin Sarawak were Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Jim Mienczakowski and Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Ir. Yudi Samyudia; Professor Michael Cloke, Dean of the School of Engineering and Science, senior academic staff of its Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and student members of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Student Branch of Curtin Sarawak.

In his welcoming speech, Professor Mienczakowski said the establishment of the laboratory marked yet another chapter in Curtin Sarawak’s ongoing partnership with Keysight Technologies, formerly Agilent Technologies’ electronic measurement business.

“As a leading education provider in Malaysia, it is indeed a great honour for us to be associated with a global organisation like Keysight Technologies, and one that shares our commitment to educating and creating career opportunities for young people, and helping develop human capital for Malaysia and other countries,” he said.

He added that the laboratory will undoubtedly enhance the learning experience at Curtin Sarawak and put its laboratory facilities at par with those at Curtin’s main campus in Perth, Western Australia.

In thanking Keysight Technologies for its support, he said Curtin Sarawak will continue to enhance its industry links to provide world-class teaching and research facilities and ensure its students receive a diverse, challenging and rewarding education.

Professor Cloke, meanwhile, remarked that the ultimate aim of any university is excellence in both research and in teaching and learning, and this formed the core of the focus of engineering and science at Curtin Sarawak.

“Central to these elements is the relationship of the university with industry and commerce, which is especially relevant to engineering where ultimately everything we do should find its way into the technology sector,” he said.

According to Professor Cloke, the Keysight Technologies – Curtin Sarawak Reference Laboratory forms an integral part of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and provides an excellent facility for its students and for industries to train their staff in the use of electronic measurement equipment.

Ee, in her speech, commented that, as a high-tech company that specialises in electronic measurement, Keysight Technologies encourages invention and innovation, and aims to provide key insights into that field across the world.

“We want to help researchers, scientists and the engineering community make new discoveries and breakthroughs that are crucial for the world. As the students, faculty and the engineering community make use of the laboratory, they will experience some of the most innovative technologies in the field of electronic measurement in the world today,” she said.
