12 get scholarships from King

KUALA LUMPUR: An ice-cube seller’s daughter was one of 12 students chosen to receive the Yang di-Pertuan Agong scholarship for her master’s degree.

Gan Siaw Chin, 24, the eldest of seven siblings from Segamat, Johor, considered herself lucky to receive the scholarship and grateful that she could continue her studies at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor.

“I can now focus on my studies. I am in the second semester of my master’s degree in Bio-process Engineering, specialising in cosmeceuticals,” she said after receiving her scholarship from Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin here yesterday.

Five other students were also selected by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Scholarship Committee for scholarships in science and technology, as well as law at the master’s and doctoral levels in local and foreign universities.

Nor Kamal Ariff Nor Hisham Shah, 25, will pursue his master’s degree in Horticulture Studies at Cornell University in the United States. Four other recipients for the master’s degrees are Afifah Mohamed, studying Science and Technology at Imperial College London, United Kingdom; Shivanand Sivamohan (Law, University of Harvard); Syazreen Sophia Abdul Halim (Environmental Science, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Seow Khai Jou (Biotechnology, UTM).

Six recipients will pursue doctorate studies.
