SERDANG: SULTAN of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah yesterday commended Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) for addressing the food crisis.
The move, he said, reflected the university’s credibility in dealing with crises facing the world today.
The sultan, who is UPM chancellor, said in this challenging era, a food crisis would be feared by the world community and Malaysia would also be affected.
“I fully support efforts taken that have re-engineered UPM to become a centre of excellence in national and international agriculture education (Food Security Centre). This re-engineering assures the acquisition of agriculture human capital that are competent and possess agricultural attributes, as well as increase research and high-impact innovation in food security, based on agriculture,” the Selangor Sultan said at UPM’s 38th convocation here yesterday.
The ruler said optimising resources for food security and improving the quality of teaching, learning and research in agriculture would have a huge impact in addressing the crisis.
Apart from helping to enhance the country’s food security, the most important thing was that it could reduce the people’s anxiety when faced with a global food crisis, he added.
