4 AUGUST 2015, KUALA LUMPUR – Sport and Exercise Science Society students from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (‘TAR University College’) will be co-organising with Yayasan CNI the “Plant a tree, Plant a Hope” Batik Sarong Charity Fun Run 2015, a unique event that promotes environmental conservation via sports. A launching ceremony and press conference was organised today to announce the coming of the run which is scheduled to be held on 11 October 2015.

The annual Run started in 2013 by Yayasan CNI as a green project that aims to create awareness of the importance of conserving the environment through tree replanting to reverse the damage caused by unabated urbanisation. The inaugural Run turned out to be a runaway success with 1,000 sarong-clad runners took part in it. The Run in the following year recorded a greater success with the number of runners doubled as compared to the preceding year.

The Batik Sarong Charity Fun Run 2015 marks the maiden collaboration between TAR University College and Yayasan CNI. During the launching ceremony, Datuk Dr Tan Chik Heok, President of TAR University College, in his speech expressed his confidence in the ability of the Sport and Exercise Science students to successfully organise the run with Yayasan CNI. He said: “Our Sport and Exercise Science students have been organising various events in recent years, namely the Malaysia Weiqi Open Championship for five consecutive years, Selangor Youth and Veteran Fencing Open twice and Wheelchair Rugby competition, just to name a few. This year, our students are given another opportunity to work together with Yayasan CNI to co-organise the Batik Sarong Charity Fun Run 2015. Through the involvement in organising such events, our Sport and Exercise Science students can acquire valuable knowledge and experience in event organising and management. They can also develop teamwork spirit, soft skills and leadership skills”.

Datin Angeline Koh, President of Yayasan CNI, highlighted in her speech that Yayasan CNI focuses on higher learning institutions around the country to be the green partners in this Run with the hope that this project will bring a cleaner and fresher environment at the campuses. She further elaborated that the project will also cultivate a green mindset in the young generation to help protect and preserve Mother Earth.

“Yayasan CNI is delighted that TAR University College has offered to be the co-organiser for this year’s Run. Their enthusiasm and young team will definitely bring a fresh and energetic perspective to the Run”, Datin Angeline Koh added.

The Batik sarong element is the highlight of this event which sets it apart from the rest. The runners will have to wear the Batik sarong or other Batik materials creatively during the Run. The reason for using the Batik sarong is that Batik is an art that is representative of Malaysia, as explained by Mr Shawn Lew Ka Shing, Organising Chairman of the Run, in his speech. He continued: “Batik is a traditional handicraft that can be said as one of the symbols of Malaysia. It is historically one of the most valuable cultures of Malaysia. Hopefully through this event we will be able to promote the culture of Malaysia among the public and be able to promote our country’s tourism”.

“Plant a Tree, Plant a Hope” Batik Sarong Charity Fun Run 2015 will be held at TAR University College Kuala Lumpur Main Campus on 11 October 2015. There will be 4 categories for this year’s Run, namely 3km Men, 3km Women, 5km Men and 5km Women.

The Run is open to public as well as TAR University College students and staff. The early bird entry fee for the public is RM40 per participant for registration received before 31 August 2015.
