APPASIA Mobile Challenge 2015

Five teams from First City University College (First City UC) showcased their talents in mobile application development as they competed against each other at the AppAsia Mobile Challenge Finals held on 8^th of December 2015.

The finalists, selected from 20 initial submissions since its launch on 22^nd of September 2015, proved to be competitive with their diverse range of applications. Each submission was evaluated and scored based on a list of stringent criteria; namely creativity and originality of ideas, concept viability, visual appeal and ease of use.

The five finalists were Kris & Kar Mun with their Dengue Alert app, Fauzan with Order Je app, Wai Kit with Right Brain Quiz app, Kah Chun with Vork app and Han Lim with Spin'zer game app.

The ceremony was opened by Dr. Christine Lee Siew Ken, the Dean of Faculty of Engineering and Computing and graced by the presence of Prof. Dr. Ho Chee Cheong, First City UC’s Vice-Chancellor as well as representatives from AppAsia Bhd, the event’s main sponsor. They are Mr. Calvert Wong, the Executive Director, Miss Phang Jo Yee, Manager of Talents Program and Miss Joekie Thong, the Group Chief Technology Officer who also served as one of the judges.

Mr. Calvert in his speech emphasized that his company took the initiative to collaborate with First City UC for this event in order to promote mobile development initiatives and creativity among students. This will be the first of similar upcoming collaborations with higher learning institutions in the future in their mission to encourage young talents to be more involved in mobile technology and interest in mobile app development.

The Vork app by Kah Chun and his team emerged as the winner of the challenge, impressing judges with their creativity and originality in providing a platform for users to post and receive work opportunities. “We are very happy that the judges have chosen our app to be the winner. This experience has certainly opened our eyes on the exciting field of mobile application. We might look into designing and developing more apps in the future,” said Kah Chun.

The top three winners won RM3,000, RM1,500 and RM800 respectively, while the runner-up teams received RM400 as consolation prize.
