Celebrating the hidden gems of First City University College

First City UC Idol finalists together with the judges

PETALING JAYA, 30 November 2017- The upbeat voice of Clement Choo Chun Han who sang ‘Lay Me Down’ rocked the stage and attracted the hearts of many during the First City UC Idol Grand Final recently.

The BA (Hons) Marketing student emerged as the winner and walked away with cash amounting RM500 and a trophy. It is noteworthy that the student is currently in talks with Mr Ian Tee, music director and producer of pH Music for future projects.

The second and third prize winner, Kyo Lee Jing Yee (Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management) who sang 大火 and Ron Kim Mun Lok (BA (Hons) Marketing) who performed 你的名字我的姓氏 received a trophy and a cash prize of RM 300 and RM200 respectively while Vivienne Ng Kar Rou (BSc (Hons) Accounting & Finance) emerged as the most popular singer and won RM100 and a trophy.

This year’s First City UC Idol received good response from the First City UC community with hundreds of students and staff attending the event.

Being an advocate of promoting balanced campus lifestyle, First City University College encourages activities which accentuate the best in students. One of the yearly initiatives which have gained much popularity among its community would be First City UC Idol.

Aimed at providing a platform for students to showcase their singing skills, First City UC Idol has produced many talented singers in the past. This year’s Idol will be featuring 8 of First City UC’s budding talents who will definitely shine the brightest on stage.

“This is the 4th year that the First City UC Student Council is organising the First City UC Idol and we have attracted a total of 30 participants. This year’s Idol saw two preliminary rounds; the audition which was held on 7 October and the semi-finals on 9 November from which the 8 finalists were selected,” said Ms Florence Kuek, Head of Student Affairs and Services Department.

She added that First City Idol is one of the key events organised by the Student Council.

This year’s performances mainly featured romantic love songs and pop songs.

For the final round, Mr Shan Selvadurai, the former secretary-general of the Malaysian Association of Live Entertainment Promoters (MALEP) and the executive board member of the Music Council of Malaysia (MMM); Mr Ian Tee, music director and producer of pH Music and three times nominees of PWH Award Malaysia (Best Music Arrangement, Best Film Scoring and Best Indie Single); En Mohd Zhafri Hassan, Vocal instructor attached with the Piano Station Kota Damansara and Ms Florence Kuek, Head of Student Affairs & Services Department (SASD) of First City University College who is also a competent vocalist and musician judged the contestants. The contestants were rated based on their vocal quality, articulation, timing / rhythm and showmanship.

“The current job market requires graduates who are versatile. Recognising this, First City UC encourages a balanced lifestyle in campus with activities such as First City UC Idol. Such activities will not just bring out the hidden gems among the students but also mould them to be well-rounded,” said Ms Yeong Yin Cheng, Chief Operating Officer of First City UC.
