August 15, 2018 | Campus News

Casual Celidh Band to add to the festive atmosphere with their catchy tunes.

Miri – 15 August 2018 – On top of the many exciting annual features of the Curtin Malaysia Carnival 2018 to be held at the campus of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) here on 25 August 2018, there will be a ‘Mini Kite Festival’, musical performances by Borneo’s only Celidh band, and live broadcast over Hitz.fm Sarawak by popular deejay Natasha Juan.

Visitors will get to meet popular Hitz Sarawak deejay Natasha at Astro Radio booth.

Perennial attractions and crowd favourites will include the ‘Future Students Hub’, where potential students can get all the information they need on courses, enrolment, scholarships and study loans, and the ‘Faculty Showcases’ by Curtin Malaysia’s three faculties and graduate school to promote studies in various engineering, science, technology, business and humanities disciplines.

There will also be a ‘STEM Exhibition’, a ‘Community Corner’ highlighting local community causes, as well as all manner of food and beverage stalls and food trucks, and campus tours for visiting students.

The Mini Kite Festival being organised as part of the carnival festivities in collaboration with Bintulu Development Authority (BDA), organisers of the 14th Borneo International Kite Festival (BIKF) to be held in Bintulu from 26 to 30 September 2018, promises to be a huge draw if the huge public response to a similar showcase at the campus in 2010 is anything to go by.

It will give visitors to the carnival a taste of the award-winning annual BIKF, the biggest festival of its kind in the world. Large inflatable kites of all shapes, sizes and colours will be taking to the skies above the Curtin Malaysia campus from 10.45 am onwards, flown by an experienced team of kite flyers from Bintulu.

Another attraction will be live performances by the Casual Ceilidh Band from Brunei playing traditional and contemporary music and songs of the Scottish, Irish and Country variety. Billed as Borneo’s only Celidh band, it is comprised of expatriates from all over the world who enjoy playing and sharing Celtic and Country music. Visitors can enjoy their catchy tunes in the campus garden from 11.00 am in the morning and from 2.00 pm in afternoon.

Yet another draw will be popular Hitz.fm deejay Natasha Juan, who will be giving listeners on-air updates on the carnival and engaging visitors with mini games and question-and-answer sessions at Astro Radio’s booth from 11 am to 3 pm. Visitors are invited to visit the booth to meet Natasha and get the chance to win Astro and Curtin merchandise.

Inflatable kites of all sizes and shapes will be showcased at Mini Kite Festival during the Carnival.

There will be literally something for everyone at the Curtin Malaysia Carnival 2018, which will be open to the public from 10.00 am to 5.00 pm. Whether you are interested to expand your knowledge, enrol in one of the university’s programmes, or simply enjoying the day’s activities and exploring its vast campus.

The event is geared to give visitors an exciting taste of life at Curtin Malaysia, the largest Australian international campus in the world, as well as Curtin University’s largest international campus and global hub in Asia.

Offering visitors a fun, hands-on learning experience in a festival-like atmosphere, the event attracts thousands of visitors and a sizeable crowd is expected again this year, including over 500 secondary school students from Miri, Brunei and Sabah.

The event is being supported by the Miri City Council for the ninth year, as well as by a number of corporate sponsors.
