First City Graduates Celebrate Hard-earned Degrees In Style

After the ceremony, First City UC’s graduating batch of 2019 gather for one final elegant group photo.

The graduation ceremony was graced by the presence of British High Commissioner to Malaysia, His Excellency Charles Hay MVO together with representatives from First City UC’s international partner universities: Anglia Ruskin University, Sheffield Hallam University, Hotel and Nottingham Trent University from the United Kingdom as well as Hotel Tourism Management Institute (HTMi) from Switzerland.

During her Welcome Message, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Saw Sor Heoh urged graduates to remember the knowledge and soft skills gleaned from their years of study at First City UC. She invited them to keep in touch with the university college from time to time via the existing alumni network.

Among this year’s graduates, there were many First Class Honours recipients who demonstrated consistent excellence in their studies and extracurricular activities, a clear sign of the university college’s continuous ability to produce top-class graduates.

One notable First Class Honours recipient was BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduate Tan Aik Sing, who had the honour of delivering the Vote of Thanks Speech. In his speech, Tan advised his fellow graduates to continue seeking inspiration in order to better themselves as working adults.

“I prefer to keep an open mind when considering my plans for the future. However, my long term goals have already been mapped out, which include obtaining a Postgraduate as well as getting certified as a professional engineer with the Ir title”, he shared afterwards.

Another First Class Honours recipient was Bachelor of Software Engineering (Hons) graduate Liem Shiaw Hong. Liem credited his competent software engineering skills to his active participation in the annual Innovation Day showcase event organised by the Faculty of Engineering and Computing.

“This event has provided me so many learning opportunities to create a marketable product. These are very precious experiences that can never be obtained from normal classes,” shared Liem who added that his carpark app, Park+ is being featured on the Google App Store.

Meanwhile, First Class Honours BA (Hons) Interior Design & Architecture graduate Samantha Lim Mei Ern said her long term goal included starting her own company one day. Like many of her coursemates, Lim was able to secure a job offer, a testament to the industry-relevance of this highly marketable study programme.

Besides playing badminton during her free time, Lim improved on her Interior Design skills by participating in competitions. In 2018, she snagged the First Prize in the Deria Design Competition (Institutional Category) held by the Malaysian Institute Interior Designers (MIID). Her entry, “THE SUNHUB” Student Hub was also on display during her graduation showcase, Sequence 2018.

For First Class Honours recipient Lee Tuck Cheng, his motivation to excel came from his position as the eldest child in the family. While others might have a different perspective, the BA (Hons) Marketing graduate sought to become a pillar of strength by achieving greatness during his time at First City UC.

Speaking of family, graduate Khong Yee Juan fulfilled a proud family tradition when he completed his Bsc(Hons) Software Engineering programme and in the process joined his older siblings in becoming an alumni of First City UC. Together with his siblings Khong Yee Jian and Khong Yee Jun as well as parents Henry and Esther Khong, they manage Malaysia’s first robotics learning centre, which has branches throughout Malaysia and even in distant countries like India and the United Arab Emirates.

Yee Juan explained that the knowledge and skills gleaned from his programme has greatly prepared him to work in the centre’s Research & Development department.
