Final Jury Week Face-Off for Talented ESMOD-ians

The Final Jury Week for graduating ESMOD Kuala Lumpur Fashion Design & Pattern Making students of batch FD1803 has concluded! The two-day event held saw a whopping number of 29 talented, fashion-savvy budding designers showcasing their fashion masterpieces following a myriad of themes.

A customary practice by ESMOD KL to bridge the connection between new talents and professional fashion industry players, a jury panel consisting of esteemed experts were invited to evaluate and score the students’ collections, listening to the rationalization behind their collections and providing advice as well as pointers for how they can be improved.

The jury panel was made up of fashion industry professionals – fashion designers Amber Tan of AMBERSZE, Bon Zainal of Bon Zainal Boutique, Taiwan-born Simon Mo, Richard Tsen of Collab Place, as well as ESMOD Kuala Lumpur’s Fashion Design & Pattern Making lecturers Yee Pui Sun and Robert Haddad.

The 29 aspiring designers who will soon graduate after a three-year journey of equipping themselves with the essential skills and knowledge to take on the fashion world by storm are: Nurmylia Riad, Nurfara Riad, Chong Hui Lim, Maeve Mok Siew Fong, Serena Lau Wen Hui, Lim Zhiqing, Ngai Kah Yue, Sia Ya Wen, Lee Min Qi, Tiffany Ho Qian Min, Wendy Liow Shu Ching, Phang Jo Yee, Khoo En Zhi, Teh Chong Yu, Tan Yong Jie, Lee Xin Yue, Natasha Chang May Teng, Chong Zhi Sheng, Loh Li Jing, See Puoh Yau, Booneswary A/P Suresh Kumar, Chong Min Wei, Yau Ching Xien, Quah Kai Ting, Goh Wan Yoke, Jolene Sin, Toida Sakura, Nur Kamilia and Wan Aqilah.

Some of the students’ interesting concepts behind their masterpieces include Nurfara Riad’s “Heist” described as bank heist being fancy, Wendy Liow’s “The Modern Rennaisance” described as a mix of modern silhouette and ancient structures, Lee Xin Yue’s “Rêverie No.2 in C# Minor, Op.24” of fairies and ballet, and Yau Ching Xien’s “Artemis and Apollo” tells the romantic love story and complex emotions between ancient Greek gods.

This year, the ‘Best Fashion Design’ award is won by Loh Li Jing for her collection “Mystery of Love” which tells the journey of raw emotions, nerves, stillness and femininity in the male form; while the ‘Best Pattern Making’ award goes to Maeve Mok Siew Fong for her collection titled “End, the Beginning”, which is about the end and the start being a point of revival.

Throughout their course of study, they have equipped themselves with design and pattern making skills that is taught in tandem with studio courses consisting of Fashion Designing, Pattern Drafting, Merchandising & Marketing, Colour Application Techniques, and the French Language contextual course.
