February 2, 2023 | Campus News

Miri – 2 February 2023 - Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) and Sunway College Kuching signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Tuesday that would allow Sunway College graduates to pursue degrees at Curtin Malaysia, the largest global campus of Curtin University here in Sarawak.

The MoU is aimed at giving Sarawakian students greater access to quality higher education provided by Curtin Malaysia, which is owned by the Sarawak Government through Yayasan Sarawak (Sarawak Foundation) and managed and operated by Curtin University in a joint venture established in 1999.

The collaboration will provide an articulation pathway for Sunway College diploma and foundation graduates to progress into year 2 of Curtin undergraduate programmes at Curtin Malaysia based on Credit for Recognised Learning (CRL) credit points granted by the university. Sarawakian students will also be able to access Yayasan Sarawak scholarships for their studies at Curtin Malaysia.

Signing on behalf of Curtin Malaysia and Sunway College Kuching, respectively, were Curtin Malaysia’s pro vice-chancellor, president and chief executive Professor Simon Leunig, and Sunway College Kuching’s director Joseph Lim.

Also present were Curtin Malaysia’s domestic student recruitment and external engagement manager Muhamad Rahman Sallehin, and Sunway College Kuching’s senior operations manager and chief executive Tang Ing Sia.

The MoU also facilitates the establishment of a professional financial courses division at Curtin Malaysia to provide the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) qualification to Curtin Malaysia undergraduates who are eligible and interested in pursuing the professional qualification. In addition, it will provide the framework for collaboration in teaching and learning (T&L) and knowledge sharing through the joint organising of seminars, conferences and workshops.

"This MoU is a great step forward in providing students in Sarawak with greater access to higher education. In addition to undergraduate courses, we offer pre-university foundation and diploma courses and postgraduate programmes, as well professional development courses for industry,” said Professor Leunig.

He added that the study areas at Curtin Malaysia included business, engineering and science, technology, arts and humanities. Furthermore, the campus has an active community of researchers engaged in research critical to Sarawak and the region, focusing on marketing and rural entrepreneurship, digital innovation, bioprocessing, green technology, aquaculture and South China Sea research.

Lim, meanwhile, said, “We very much look forward to working with Curtin Malaysia to drive forward this collaboration and assist more Sarawakians to pursue higher education in line with Sarawak’s Post-COVID Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.”

“It also highlights our commitment to preparing students for the workforce by offering professional financial courses and qualifications," he added.
