Curtin Malaysia students and staff attend house stock trading workshop

April 18, 2023 | Campus News

Miri – 10 April 2023 – The student-run Curtin Finance and Investment Club (CFIC) of Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently organised a follow-up workshop on house stock trading for students and staff who attended a prior introductory stock trading workshop on 20 March 2023.

The workshop entitled ‘Creating a Trading Plan’, which was facilitated by finance lecturer Alpha Ngadan, was designed to give the participants a hands-on experience in stock trading. It started with a recap of the topics covered in the first workshop, such as the different trading styles, the need to register with given trading tools, and identifying potential stocks.

Alpha also reminded them of the virtual funds that the Bursa Market Place offers, and guided them on how to create and fund portfolios in the platform.

In the afternoon, the participants took their places in the Curtin Trading Room to start their virtual trading journey.

The Curtin Trading Room is Curtin Malaysia’s innovative learning and teaching, research and industry engagement space within its Faculty of Business that simulates a real-life trading floor environment and provides access to the latest financial market software with a flexible immersive environment. It is an up-to-date learning environment, the first of its kind in Malaysia, that enhances the student experience and facilitates appropriate student collaboration and study needs.

Before they began, Alpha reminded the participants of the importance of establishing the risk reward ratio prior to buying any stocks. The participants were then guided with charts and technical indicators that allowed them to identify potential stocks and set stop limits (either to lock profit or cut loss). This practical session allowed them to experience buying, earning profit, and cutting losses in a virtual setting.

Alpha also reminded the participants that the stock market is populated by three main groups - institutions, retailers and foreigners – and the goal is to identify a potential stock where institutions are buying or have interests in.

At the end of the session, Alpha invited the participants to join the next stock trading workshop by the CFIC on 15 April 2023, which will be conducted by well-known technical analysis and Japanese charts author and full-time trader, Fred Tam, and his associate Mohamad Riyadhi Ramlan Bin Mat Yunus.

Participants can expect to gain significant technical knowledge of stock trading, including chart construction and identifying trends and patterns, allowing them to make informed decisions when selecting stocks to trade.

The workshop is open to the public and registration is now open until 15 April 2023. It will be held from 9 am to 6 pm in The Auditorium at Curtin Malaysia and the participation fee is RM20 for members of the public and RM15 for CFIC members.
