TAR UMT NAMED ESPORTS ACADEMY OF THE YEAR

Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT) became the first higher education institution in Malaysia to be conferred the Esports Academy of the Year award during the Malaysia Esports Awards 2023 held on 27 January 2024 at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC).

TAR UMT was nominated alongside three other candidates – Pahang Esports Academy, Todak Academy, and RSG Academy – making TAR UMT the only full-fledged university to be in the running for the award presented during the inaugural Malaysia Esports Awards event.

Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UMT was present to receive the award from Mr Mervin Lai, Principal of Playbook Academy.

“I am very proud to accept this award and on behalf of TAR UMT, I thank the Malaysia Esports Awards for honouring us as the first Esports Academy of the Year. Esports is a booming industry and garnering constant attention and interest especially among youths. As such, TAR UMT will continue its role in raising up highly-skilled future talents for the nation’s esports industry. We will remain focused in strengthening our curricular and co-curricular programmes related to esports as well as providing a conducive learning environment for our students to learn and evolve,” said Prof Ir Dr Lee.

In 2022, TAR UMT introduced esports into its list of extra co-curricular courses, where co-curricular is a compulsory subject for all Diploma and Bachelor Degree students. The University also has the TAR UMT Interactive Gaming Society that regularly participates in university-level esports competitions while sharing a collective passion for esports among its members.

The Malaysia Esports Awards is an awards ceremony held to honour the brightest and most remarkable contributors in the rapidly growing esports industry in Malaysia. The event is supported by the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS), Malaysia Esports Federation (MESF), and Esports Integrated (ESI).
