The world of tax may not be everyone's cup of tea, but for Ng Yew Sheng, it's a playground of challenges and opportunities.  This driven young man, a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) student of Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology (TAR UMT), recently made waves by securing the second Runner-up position at the EY Young Tax Professional of the Year (EY YTPY) competition 2024.

The story began with encouragement from Yew Sheng’s lecturer who motivated him not to miss another shot at the competition, considering this is Yew Sheng’s second time entering it.

"I made full use of my experience, particularly my understanding of how the competition works, to help me prepare more effectively this time around."  By leveraging his prior knowledge, he could anticipate the types of challenges he would face and focus his preparation on areas where he knew he could refine his skills.

The EY YTPY competition is renowned for its intensity. Facing complex tax scenarios and tight deadlines can be nerve-wracking for participants. Yew Sheng’s secret to staying calm and composed under pressure lies in focusing on the process, not the outcome.

"I tried not to overthink the results and focused on giving my absolute best," he explains. By trusting in his preparation and concentrating on executing his knowledge effectively, he was able to maintain his composure and deliver his best performance.

Sharing his experience in preparing for the competition, he said, "Time is a finite resource, especially when juggling between the competition and my academic commitments. Thus, time management is crucial as it helps me allocate sufficient time for preparation for both aspects, allowing me to avoid last-minute stress."

"On top of having a good command of knowledge on tax and the latest industry practices, confidence is an important part of the equation to give my best. With confidence, I can effectively present my ideas, making decisive judgments, and staying composed when faced with challenging scenarios."

While Yew Sheng may not have clinched the top spot, the sense of accomplishment he feels is undeniable. "I'm proud of how far I've come, and the journey has inspired me to keep pursuing opportunities to represent my country at international level in the future," he shares.  "It validates the hard work, dedication, and hours of preparation I invested in the competition. "

He also added, "I see meeting other participants as another valuable aspect of this competition".  It's a chance to network with like-minded professionals from diverse backgrounds, share knowledge, and gain new perspectives on tax practices from around the world. I believe these connections will be invaluable for my future."
