The country’s largest secondary school art competition – Malaysia Top 10 Outstanding Young Artists Awards (MT10) has returned, now bigger and better than ever! With lucrative offerings of The One Academy scholarships and cash rewards as its top prizes, thousands of young talents eagerly awaited for this annual opportunity to compete with other artistic peers.
In its 27th edition, this nationwide art competition reinstated the tradition of collaborating with The Walt Disney Company by incorporating Disney•Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” as the theme for this year. This time with more than RM885,000 worth of scholarships and cash prizes up for grabs, The One Academy scoured the whole country in search for the finest artists since June, having held the competition in 22 locations across 12 states.
This year, the competition attracted over 4,000 student participants, setting a record for the highest number of participants in its history. On 28 July, the final competition and awards ceremony took place at The One Academy’s main campus in Bandar Sunway, Petaling Jaya.
This national-level drawing competition serves as a stepping stone for many outstanding Malaysian artists aged 14 to 18 to achieve their creative dreams. Since its inception, it has awarded more than RM20 million in scholarships and cash prizes to deserving outstanding young artists. With an increase in scholarship prize this time, it aims to motivate students and inspire them to unleash their artistic side. It also hopes to further develop the country’s creative scene by encouraging the younger generation to realise the increasing demand for creative ideas and application of arts.
The Gold Award winner won RM90,000 worth of The One Academy scholarship, followed by the Silver Award with RM70,000 and Bronze Award with RM50,000. Each also received RM3,000, RM2,000 and RM1,000 in cash prizes respectively. Apart from that, the Young Artists Awards also awarded seven winners with RM30,000 worth of scholarship and RM500 cash prize each. It does not end there, 80 of the best participants also walked away with scholarships of RM8,000 and RM5,000.
The drawing theme for this year’s competition was ‘Journey of a Teenager’, whereby participants were asked to express a teenager’s road to self-discovery. They can choose from a range of teen-centric topics, such as the expression of identity, a teenager’s wishes, inner musings, aspirations, friendships, and challenges faced by today’s teens.
Participants were allowed to use all traditional mediums such as watercolour, colour pencil, gouache, oil pastel, acrylic paints, pencil sketch, inking and others, except for oil paints, spray paints, and cut-and-paste collage.
