Bachelor of (Hons) Petroleum Engineering

Course Overview

The Petroleum Engineering degree programme at UCSI University is designed to equip students with a solid foundation and knowledge of oil and gas exploration, production and development.

The programme encompasses a well-balanced curriculum that focuses on both upstream and downstream industries. It covers a wide range of courses that include but are not limited to mathematics, basic sciences, computing, introductory engineering, geology and petrophysics, drilling engineering, reservoir engineering, production engineering, economic and project management, as well as humanities and social sciences. Special features of the programme include:

• Commercial reservoir simulation software used for teaching and learning;
• Reservoir engineering including elements in rocks and fluid properties, enhanced oil recovery and natural gas engineering;
• Oil and gas production operations including well completion, well diagnosis and treatments;
• Field trips;
• Laboratories to study drilling, rocks and fluid properties;
• Field development project; and
• Final Year research and development project.

In this programme, students are also required to undergo industrial training under UCSI University’s Co-operative Placement (Co-op) Programme at the end of their 2nd and 3rd academic years. The Co-op programme aims to provide an avenue for students to gain exposure to professional practices in an actual working environment as well as develop the necessary soft skills.

All of UCSI University’s engineering degree programmes comply with the latest requirements for accreditation by the Malaysian Engineering Accreditation Council, which fulfils the international requirements drafted in the Washington Accord.

Assessments

The structure of the Petroleum Engineering curriculum is developed to provide both breadth and depth across the range of Petroleum Engineering specialisations in order to produce competent graduates. The teaching and learning approaches vary according to the nature of course or topic being delivered. The programme employs a range of teaching methods to ensure the successful achievement of the learning outcomes of its programmes that include:

Entry Requirements

For Engineering degree: STPM Minimum 2C including Mathematics and Physics ‘A’ Levels Minimum 2D including Mathematics and Physics UEC Minimum 5 credits, including Mathematics and Physics CPU CPU – Minimum average of 60% in 6 subjects, incl. of a minimum score of 60% in Mathematics and Physics Local Matriculation Minimum CGPA 2.0 Foundation from other University/ College Minimum CGPA 2.0 WAEC/NECO Maximum aggregate of 15 points out of best 5 subjects, inclusive of minimum B’s in Mathematics and Physics Diploma/ Advance Diploma/ Degree/ equivalent Pass (Subject to School discretion after reviewing transcript & syllabus. Max credit transfer of 30%) Other qualifications deemed equivalent to STPM/A-Level by MQA Minimum overall average of 65%, inclusive of minimum 65% in Mathematics and Physics International Baccalaureate Minimum 26/42 points from 6 subjects (Minimum scores of 4/7 in Mathematics & Physics) SAM SAM – Minimum average of 65% in 5 subjects, incl of minimum scores of 65% in Mathematics and Physics *Chemistry is required for Chemical Engineering; Physics is required for all other programmes. In terms of responsibilities, graduates from the Petroleum Engineering course can conduct studies for the exploration, development and extraction of oil and gas deposits as well as; plan, design, develop and supervise projects for the drilling, testing, re-working and completion of oil and gas wells.
