Course Description

Ever wonder how new drugs and vaccines are discovered? Why there are improved and accelerated drug testing, better diagnostic capabilities, and the availability of foods which enhance nutritional values? This progress has tremendously improved healthcare and is viewed by many scientists as only a beginning to the great era of medical biotechnology. Scientists believe that the availability of “targeted therapies” for diseases and individuals should dramatically improve drug safety and efficacy, and the development of predictive technologies may lead to a new era in disease prevention, particularly in some of the world’s rapidly developing economies. This sound rationale holds great potential and promise in the field of medical biotechnology.

The IMU Medical Biotechnology programme has incorporated key features to prepare the modern Medical Biotechnologist for challenges beyond tomorrow. These features offer an appreciable advantage to students as there is significant emphasis on concepts and theories important for creating a stable platform to develop technical know-how and skills.

The technical skills of the student begins with learning in a controlled laboratory environment. As the student progresses, he/she will be taught to think and solve problems analytically through modules that were specially designed for them to make independent decisions.

Furthermore, IMU has a myriad of expertise in the field of medical and pharmaceutical sciences. The faculty members are already engaged in active research work, providing a suitable environment for the medical biotechnology student to experience the thinking, planning, application and discussion related to research.

  • # The duration of this programme must be a minimum of 1 year in the same accredited institution and foundation in other disciplines are accepted.
  • Minimum credit in Mathematics, one science subject and one other subject at SPM level.  Students may be exempted from the above requirement if they achieved the same results at Pre University level.
 
 

FOUNDATION IN SCIENCE

  • Foundation in Science qualifications from other higher education institutions will be considered on a case by case basis for admission into the local IMU programmes.
  • Students with IMU Foundation in Science can apply into IMU programmes and programmes with selected credit transfer options, upon meeting the entry requirement eligibility. ** (Please refer to IMU Foundation in Science brochure for more details)
 

FOR ADMISSIONS INTO THE IMU FOUNDATION IN SCIENCE PROGRAMME, STUDENTS WILL NEED TO HAVE:

  • Pass SPM / O-Levels with minimum 5 credits in Mathematics, 2 Science subjects and 2 other subjects.
    Note: Specific SPM / O-Levels requirements may be needed for admissions into IMU programmes.
 

ENGLISH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT

MUET Band score of 3*
IELTS Overall band score of 5.5*

 

Those who opt for overseas option must achieve an overall band score of 7.0.

TOEFL Overall score of 183 (CBT)/ 65 (iBT)*
Cambridge English : Advanced (CAE) Overall score of 160* (for International students only)
Cambridge English : Proficiency (CPE) Overall score of 180* (for International students only)
Pearson Test of English (PTE) Overall score of 42* (for International students only)

* ONLY applicable for those who are completing the entire degree at IMU, Malaysia.
