Course Description

Dentistry is art and science of prevention and treatment of diseases of the oral cavity and associated maxillofacial region. Oral health is an integral part of general health. The dental surgeon provides professional support to the community to achieve and maintain optimum oral health.

The practice of dentistry involves several speciality areas including the following:-

  • Conservative dentistry (Restoration of teeth damaged by disease or trauma. This can be filling, a root filling, crown or bridge),
  • Prosthetic dentistry (Replacement of teeth that has been extracted by a removable prosthesis called denture),
  • Paediatric dentistry (Prevention and treatment of the diseases of the oral cavity of children),
  • Periodontology (Prevention and treatment of the diseases of the supporting tissues of the teeth consisting of the gums, ligaments and bone),
  • Oral pathology (diagnosis of oral diseases),
  • Oral medicine (non-surgical treatment of oral diseases),
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (Procedures to treat infected painful teeth, operations in the oral cavity, management of pathological conditions trauma in the oral cavity and the jaws),
  • Orthodontics (Corrections of mal-alignment of teeth),
  • Dental Public Health (Dental services organization and prevention of oral diseases) and
  • Research (Generation of new knowledge for the progress of the profession).

  • Introduction to General Medicine and General Surgery and General Dentistry. [This will be implemented as Correlation sessions in the Anatomy and Physiology courses].

  • MQA: Pengajian Malaysia (Malaysian Studies)

Entry Requirements

Degree

  • General Certificate of Education Ordinary (“O”) levels 5Bs each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths (or Add Maths) and another subject.
  • STPM / A-Level: Grade BBB, ABC, AAC in 3 subjects, i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Maths.
  • General Certificate of Education Advanced(“A”)levels, Grades BBB,ABC or AAC in 3 subjects Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
  • Matriculation/Foundation in Science/Pre-Medical course: CGPA 3.0 in 3 subjects, i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Maths and course not less than 1 yr and comply with minimum entry for SPM (5Bs each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths (or Add Maths) and another subject).
  • Diploma: Diploma in Health Sciences, CGPA 3.5 and course not less than 5 sem or 2 1/2 yrs and coply with minimum entry for SPM (5Bs each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths (or Add Maths) and another subject).
  • Degree in Medical Sciences, min CGPA 3.3 (5 years programme).
  • Degree in Medical Sciences, min CGPA 3.5 (4 years programme).
  • Degree in the Arts or Humanities, min CGPA 3.5 (5 years programme) and 3Cs each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, General Science, Maths or Add Maths at SPM.
  • Degree in the Arts or Humanities, min CGPA 3.75 (4yr programme) and 3Cs each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, General Science, Maths or Add Maths at SPM.
  • UEC : ‘B4′ each in 5 subjects, i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths and Add Maths.
  • MUFY/ UNSW/ Western Australian Curriculum Council/ HSC/ Trinity College Foundation Studies/ Australian Universities Foundation Programme/ SAM/ Victorial Certificate of Education, Australia Year 12 : Aggregate or Average of 80% in any 3 subjects, i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Maths OR 80% ATAR.
  • NCEA/ New Zealad Bursary/ CPU/ CIMP : Average of 80% in any 3 subjects, i.e Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Maths.
  • Indian Pre-U : Average of 70% in any 3 subjects, i.e Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Maths.
  • IB : 30 points  subjects with a minimum of 2 science subjects or maths at Higher Level (HL) and 1 science subject at Standard Level (SL) and attained a minimum score of 4 each in Biology, Chemistry, Physics (or Maths).
  • Other Qualification approved by Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA).

Career Prospects

Dental Surgeons, Dental Technologists and Dental Surgery Assistants have a choice of working in government clinics and hospitals of the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Defence, Department of Aborigine Affairs, in the universities, as well as the private sector.
