Biotechnology applies advances in the biological sciences, particularly genetics, to practical challenges in food production, industry, health and medicine. Its applications include improving food quality and processing, producing useful chemicals through cells and proteins, and developing new medicines and therapeutic products.
The Bachelor of Science (Honours) Biotechnology is designed to produce graduates with strong scientific and technical capabilities in biotechnology.
Through the final-year project, students may develop specialised skills in areas such as proteomics, genomics, enzyme and protein biotechnology, protein engineering, immunology, fermentation technology, plant biotechnology, biosensors, phytomedicine, phytochemistry, cell and tissue culture and bioinformatics.
