Chemistry is the study of the properties, composition and structure of matter, the transformation of substances and the energy changes associated with those transformations. A strong understanding of chemistry is valuable in fields such as biology, physics, geology, engineering and biotechnology.
Chemistry is often described as a central science because it connects the physical sciences with life and applied sciences. Its applications include polymer and biopolymer development, liquid nano-fertilisers, soil chemistry, semiconductor materials, solar cells, batteries and photocatalysts for hydrogen generation.
The Bachelor of Science (Honours) Chemistry develops students' theoretical knowledge and practical capabilities through laboratory experiments and instrumental techniques.
The programme covers organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry, as well as biochemistry. Students are also introduced to interdisciplinary areas such as environmental chemistry, green chemistry, food chemistry, polymer chemistry and medicinal chemistry.
Professional Recognition
The programme has been accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry since 2013. Graduates may also apply for membership of the Institute of Chemistry Malaysia.
