6. Sports psychologist

What you'll do

Sports psychologists work mainly with athletes to ensure they have a healthy mind-body balance so that they can achieve optimal performance in their game. As a sports psychologist, you will use techniques like interviews, observations and counselling to help your clients set and reach their goals and overcome mental and emotional stresses related to performance anxiety, poor self-esteem, and burnout.

What you'll do

Well, they may have a great memory but the person behind all these numbers is more likely a statistician. Yup, you heard right. So if you're a number-crunching lover with a passion for sports, you could have a career as a sports statistician. A sports statistician records statistics, studies trends, prepares summary records and is sometimes called in to settle score disputes. The statistics and reports generated by sports statisticians are used not only by sports reporters but by coaches and team managers to monitor the performance of their players or future players.

8. Event planner

What you'll do

From Formula 1 races to the Olympics, these great sporting events take a tremendous amount of planning. Even planning a sports carnival for your college takes a few sub-committees working together to pull it off. If you enjoy sports and planning for events, you could make it your career. An event planner needs to choose and inspect an event venue to ensure it meets the requirements of the client. You will work with sponsors and organising committees to plan the event and keep to the budget. You may also need to deal with services like publicity, accommodation, transportation, catering, signage, displays, special needs requirements, printing and event security.

10. Sports retail

What you'll do

If you've ever been obsessed about a particular sport, you would know that getting seriously involved in a sport also means spending a lot on equipment, gadgets and accessories to improve your performance or pleasure. Retail in sports is a big business. If you're a runner, you'd probably keep up with the best pair of shoes, apparel and running app which changes every season. If your sport is fishing, you'd need more than a rod and tackle – believe me. And boy, do sportspeople love upgrades!

In retail, you can work in marketing or advertising and promotions. You will plan, direct, or coordinate marketing policies and programmes; and determine the demand for your products. You will need to analyse market trends, identify potential customers and stay ahead of competitors.
