TOA Talents Bag Japan Award at Design Competition

February 18, 2019 | Campus News

The 7 winners from The One Academy

The One Academy’s creative talents had recently partaken in the Asia Student Package Design Competition (ASPaC) 2018 and won big. This competition serves as an international cultural exchange project which aims to provide a platform for young talented designers across Asia from countries such as South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam to showcase their work. The winners are given the opportunity to exhibit their design and entries in participating countries as well as attend company visits and workshops organised. This in turn provides them immeasurable experience and the chance to explore creative culture in other parts and regions of Asia. The theme for this year was ‘Innovation’ and the partakers surely delivered their best!

The participants from The One Academy bagged a total of seven awards with their stunning handiwork. Winning one Honourable Award and six Merit Awards, Chow Zhen Lu, Yap Jia Ern, Foo Wai Kee, Kylie Chia Ying Yee, Jeslyn Ooi , Chew Siew Qi and Lim Shiau Ting have proved that creativity and talent knows no borders. When asked about their journey during this competition, all of them agreed that this competition was truly challenging but fruitful. Kylie Chia recounted that she felt truly content and confident upon hearing she had won a Merit Award for her design whereas Chew Siew Qi said she felt a sense of encouragement for her skills and abilities.

However, their path to success was not all smooth sailing as each of them faced their own set of challenges. One of the challenges overcame was the mechanism of the packaging itself. Each participant had a unique approach to the competition’s theme of ‘Innovation’ and with big ideas comes the challenge of executing it perfectly. To produce a worthy design, the students had to look past conventional packaging available in the market and come up with something new thus leading to them exploring new mechanisms. Although this proved to be challenging, they persevered.

Foo Wai Kee, who received a Merit Award, thanked The One Academy for providing classes and the knowledge to execute her winning design. She also noted that the feedback and comments she received from lecturers on her handiwork was helpful as she was able to improve herself and her work based on it. Similarly, Yap Jia Ern also thanked the college for not only bearing the costs of delivering the submission but also the lecturers for providing constructive criticism on which she improved herself on.

One of the students, Chow Zen Lu had been awarded the Honourable Award for her creation and was invited to Japan for the exhibition happening there. Her experience was truly incredible as she not only got to meet other makers and creators but also got to learn a ton of new things about culture as well. “The whole trip was fun and exciting; during the exhibition I got to learn about many other countries culture”, she said.

Their advice for future participants was to never give up and always keep practising. “Hard work becomes good work” said Foo Wai Kee. Kylie Chia’s advice to students is to just go for it. “Don’t doubt yourself and try, because if you don’t try you will never know”, she concluded. This serves as inspiration to all creatives out there that hard work and dedication will get you closer to success.
